I'm a fast labour so I will be on antibiotics and so will the baby when its born... My question is will baby be on a IV drip or given antibiotics another way? How long for? And will I be able to breast feed and hold baby?

I've not got to see anyone till the day I go in to the hospital to be induced and just wanted to be prepared for what will happen

Hi. I didn't know I had it at my last birth so my wee girl had to get the antibiotics for 48 hours at regular intervals. She had a cannula (sp?) put in and a splint on her arm to keep it straight so she could still wear clothes etc and move around but it was just a bit awkward. We just had to go down to the special care every few hours to get the penicillan xx

Thanks for the reply hun, least it gives me an idea of what's going to go on... Just hope I can still breastfeed it

You get 2 lots of iv drugs 4 hours apart and they will try stall your labour til you've had both.
It won't affect bfing (hell get the antibs in utero so through your milk will make no diff)

This is the last min resort as u weren't treated in labour.

I'm aware of that as I said in my post. If you re-read her first post, she does say the baby will be getting antibiotics as well due to her fast labours and she wanted to know how they give them to baby so that was my answer.

Last time I had one lot via IV some time between 12-1pm, then vaguely remember them hurriedly putting another bag up at about 3pm when I was leaning forwards trying to get rid of my anterior lip. Baby was born 3.47pm. No other AB's were given to either of us after that, all was fine.

Hiya, I asked my midwife about this on Monday as I don't anticipate being in labour for long enough to get the full dose of antibiotics. They won't do anything to interfere with my labour or slow it down. If I haven't had the full dose of antibiotics before LO arrives LO will be monitored for 12 hours. As long as s/he doesn't show signs of having GBS s/he won't need antibiotics and we'll be allowed home. I will be able to BF and have LO with me (they won't take him/her away to do observations). :flower:

Well when I asked the consultant that sorted out my induction date she said both me and little one will have the antibiotics because my labours are less then 4hrs long... And all I know is I go in on Thursday morning 8am get checked in and they will start me off... Antibiotics and hormone drip to get me going... At least I can still BF which is what I want... I guess I won't really find out what's going to happen till on the day
