I have to ask what is the purpose???

A friend of mine gave me some blankets and sheets, I find if you know someone who is not using them they will give them to you. For the first 8 months or so you will only swaddle them in recieving blankets really. A blanket won't be necessary for some time. So I will be using crib sheets, and the blankets will be used for tummy time.

What are receiving blankets? Is that like cellular blankets (the ones with holes in for ventilation??) How many do you think I will need? (its my first and Im clueless) x

They are just small, light weight, breathable blankets used to wrap the baby up really comfy in when they are newborns.

You could use the quilt as a rug/playmat/wall rug :)

I just think things can be made cheaper. To each their own but I just don't justified when I can go spend 8 dollars on a pound of baby yarn and with the scraps I have at home make her something cutsy and girly :)

I am def not wasting money on a set this time. With my first, I bought a $200 Dr Seuss set to match my son's room, and we never used any of it except the sheet and bumpers. The quilt was too bulky to use in a crib, and I didn't like the skirt. This time I just bought sheets and will use swaddle blankets, and baby blankets when baby is older.

I'd say go with about five blankets big enough to wrap the baby in fully, and depending on how much you intend to use your pram, between two and five smaller pram size blankets - in the early days you need lots as baby will sick all over them and nappies will leak etc and you won't want to be washing twice a day.

I think the main purpose of matching bedding sets for babies is to part hormonal women from a large wad of cash :haha: In the name of making the nursery 'perfect', you obviously MUST have all matching, beautiful bedding, so you can go in and coo over it while lovingly stroking your bump and imagining your little darling peacefully sleeping in that cot. Fast forward a few months and the bedding will be abandoned and the baby sleeping sprawled at odd angles in the cot with blankets half hanging off his bum and any decorative items/toys etc chucked all over the floor! You'll long ago have got over the desire to make anything match and just settle for blankets that are clean(ish) and not covered in puke.

:haha: I love this. Yet, so true!!

Im making stuff myself too. Im making a variation of this just now with fabric I have in the house. If it gets vomited on or wee'd on it doesnt really matter! (Ive changed the word "play" to "poop" on mine lol)

I just picked out fitted sheets and a dust skirt. I won't use bumpers or the comforter and when they are ready for a toddler bed more than likely we will move them to their adult at that point so the bedding sets won't work anyway.

I bought a bedding set for my DD and the price was ridiculous. $75 bucks just for the bumper, quilt and skirt. I still had to buy the sheets separate for another $20. It's crazy, but they know we will buy it so they think they can get away with it.

Lol... we bought a bedding set on clearance. Think it was 9 pieces for 120. It came with a small little accent pillow along with the usual and 2 curtain things I have no idea what it's called... the little decor that goes on the top of the window.
It's all purely decoration and I plan on eventually using the blanket that came with it for when LO is older.
But yeah... really it's pointless other than to make things look purdy :D

I never bought a crib set for first LO we just used a mattress protector and slip with recieving blankets. Its pointless in my opinion to pay that much for something theyll only use for a little while

This thread is so useful! I love the cute bedding sets and have been saving up to get an expensive set I saw in babies r us. Don't think I'll bother now and I'll just get a plain green black out blind and some nice coloured sheets and blankets instead! What a waste, 80quid just for the bedding and they can't even use it!! X

For my daughter i went ALL out on this massive bedding set with all the extra pieces for $300... she NEVER used any of it. WASTE OF MONEY (or so i think), so with my son i bought a few crib sheets and a few small proper baby blankets (O' and bumper). All together like $35. Thats IT! Works great for us and saved us loads of money will do the same with #3.
