Could someone work this out for me and tell me how to do it please as i have a few to do.

Work out the % difference of sales this month versus the same month last year?

this month 3140
last year 2100

I would really appreciate some help i think i know how to do it but not too sure??:thumbup:

Its around a 49 - 50% increase.

The sales are 1040 up on last year, so you need to find out what percentage 1040 is of the original sales figure.

2100 divided by 1040 is 2.02. Then to find the percentage do 100 divided by 2.02

Its a bit of a long way round and I'm sure there is a much easier way, but this one works.

Ok, easier way found

Just do 3140 divided by 2100. Gives you 1.495. Ignore the 1, its 49.5% Can you see what I mean on this?

Is it not
3140/2100 x 100

Which gives you 66% or am i making it up?

ohno so the other one could be wrong , i was doing it a different way to both of you and getting confused, anyone else know which is right? x

ps i was also getting 66% the way i was doing it but i just didnt know if i was doing it right xx

Ive written those numbers downt he wrong way

2100/3140 x 100 =66%

Youve got me doubting myself aswell lol

I used to be really good at pergentages, but it must have been replaced in my brain by the macca pacca song or something

lol I was allways bad at maths and then i have to work in cosmetics/sales so i have to work out targets, percentages etc

when i do that i get 66.8 dont you have to round it up to 67% ?

Ok this month you got 1040 more sales. This is 49% of last month's sales therefore a 49% increase.

It depends if you are working out the percentage increase on last year, or the percentage decrease on last year from this year. If you want the increase on last years then it is 49.5%

ok thankyou everyone but how do i work that out then as i have others to do do too ? x

yes its to show the increase x

For the percentage increase divide the difference between the two by the smaller one. In this case:
3140-2100 all divided by 2100 and finally times by 100. The difference is there given as a percentage of the first month.

To find out what percentage of this month's figures last month's is divide 2100 by 3140 and times by 100. Last month's figure is 67% of this month's. (These are all rounded number by the way).

The multiply by 100 just brings it into whole numbers for the percentage. You can work it out without this step. When you get the decimal 1=100% so 0.49=49% and so on. 1.5 is one and a half times more.

Sorry just read that these re annual figures not monthly. Insert year for every time I've said month! lol

Ok so if i have a bigger answer which is 132.026.... is that 32 % ?

LOL can I give the silly answer: 49.523809522380952%

It's (3140 - 2100) / 2100 * 100 = 49.523809522380952%

For reference, the formula is:
Step 1 - 'this year' minus 'last year' = 'the difference'
Step 2 - 'the difference' divided by 'last year', multiplied by 100 = growth %

:)

thanks guys ive finally done it YAY at long last x

I havnt rounded them up though so say an answer is 26.9 should that be 27% ?

I tend to use at least 1-2 decimals when dealing with percentages (otherwise when dealing with larger numbers it can give you false numbers), but if you want to round off, the rule is:
5 and above you round up, 4 and below, round down.
