hi for a long time ive alwys wanted to become a midwife but was scared i wouldnt succeed but last night i though i shouldnt put myself down and go for it but i dont know where to start.

is there any midwifes on here or anyone training to become one who can help me and tell me the steps i need to take to go into this career.

thanks xx

Hey hun this is what I want to do too.

You will need to do either a health related course or an Access to Higher Education Course at college. Health and Social Care Courses are usually 2 years but access course are 1 or 2 years.

You can then apply to Uni to do Midwifery and its usually a 3 year course. You should contact your local college and ask to speak to a careers advisor, good luck hun xx

thanks will they take anyone on even if my GSCE results wasnt great. i did go collage and do child care but i found midwife was more what i wanted to do x

I did exactly the same hun did Childacre for 1 year and realised I actually wanted to do midwifery.

For the access course you dont need GCSE's as you can gain them on the course the basics such as maths english and science :) At least where I live you do. But like I say it would be best for you to check with your local college as some of them are different xx

yer iam going to call my locl college which is oldham college and ask them about the courses. i think i will make a great midwife when i was pregnant i just kept reading everything i could find and now my friends come to me for advice i have always loved watching anything that involves pregnancey i cant wait now just wish i would of done this in the first place when i was 16 but at the age of 16 i didnt have a clue what i wanted to do.

It depends whether you want to do the degree or diploma (alot of unis are phasing out the diploma).

If you want to do the diploma, you have to be 17 1/2 to apply and have 5 or more GCSEs at C or above. You need an UCAS form (used to be NMAS for diploma, UCAS for degree, but now it's UCAS for both).

The degree, you need 3 A levels or equivelent and bust be 18+.

You can however do an access course, to help you gain entry onto either courses.

Hi Hun,
The UCAS website may be helpful.........why dont you look on universities near you website and see which one does midwifery and the entry requirements. As the other girls said it depends on if it's diploma or degree as to if you need GCSE or A levels. but if you have been out of study they will probobly want an access course which you can do at a collage.
Just a hint......in my area midwifery places are really contested and fought over so some voluntary/part time job experience would make you stand out.
Good Luck
xx

Same in my area we only have 18 places a year and we are advised to do nursing first then apply as more are accpeted that way

i ways got told there was a shortage of midwifes??

There is but my Uni stupidly only accept 18 a year! There is another Uni I can apply to also so gonna try both xx

There is a shortage but unfortunately as with many things today in the NHS it comes down to money and targets, it's also how many your local uni will take on each year as I am assuming you dont want to travel too far????
A lot of girls have done childrens nursing cos they couldnt get on to midwifery and will then go for a midwifery top up-----the bonus of this is that you are dual qualified....but it takes longer to get there.
Keep confidant I am sure you will get there!!
xx
