Hi ladies, i have seen that many of you have made things for your bubbas, i think it is such a lovely idea, so now i am on maternity leave, i would love to make a blanket/quilt for bubs, only, i need help. Where do i go to get bits, i am a total beginner at this sort of thing, so cant start from scratch kind of need a 'kit' if you know what i mean. Do i just go to somewhere like hobbycraft or is there somewhere better, want to make something nice.

Thanks in advance x

Yeah Hobbycraft do lots of 'kits'. Or you could get some material, lay some stuffing over the top and then lay a piece of fabric with pictures on (animals etc) over the top of that. Sew them together and voila! A quilt! Then stitch round some of the images on the fabric to make them stand out.

Hi you can get some cheaper deals on ebay in their craft section, you could get quilted squares and sew them together, or even make an embroided picture and frame it for your babys room, or just take a look at whats available and im sure you will come up with an idea, making a blanket is a lovely idea for keepsake, can search baby fabric, and foam and make your own squares even. :) check this link https://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw...squares&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

I would def go to hobbycraft but id be hopeless so cant really help on that one!
BUT, i felt the same in terms of making something and so decided to make the baby a kind of frame with messages on it from close family.
It has his 5month scan pic in the middle and i got family to write a kind of 'cant wait to meet you and cuddle you ' etc. message for him around the scan picture. Its turned out really lovely and i'll hang it in his nursery. Wanted it to be something he could look back at in yrs to come ( espesh to read some advice from his great grandparents to be)and some of the messages are so so sweet. i went to hobbycraft to get some stickers and fancy bits to make it look nice and im chuffed with it. Just an idea i stole off someone else hehe, and didnt take too long to do at all. Getting everyone to write their messages was the hardest part as i had 14 to collect :) xxx

You don't always need kits, tbh I find these a bit costly when compared to buying the materials you need individually. I very rarely shop at hobbycraft, I find the internet far more competitive.
You can find loads of free sewing and knitting patterns online with lots of clear instructions.

A small quilt is a nice easy starter, if you're going for a basic patchwork squares type quilt, you don't even need a pattern really, and you can buy pre cut squares on ebay and etsy.com, they are sometimes called jelly rolls or charm packs. You just stitch the squares together, choose a backing material, buy some quilt batting/wadding and then snadwich it all together and bind the edges, you will find realy clear instructions online.

Knitting a blanket is also easy, you just knit a load of squares then stitch them together, if you know anyone who knits, they can help you get started, nice wool is expensive though.

Embroidery is also a really cheap and cheerful hobbie and super easy, I enjoy it because you can do really small projects that don't take hours to complete.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn embroidery, it comes with TONS of free transfer patterns, and is so so easy to follow https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sublime-Stitching-Jenny-Hart/dp/0811850110/ref=pd_sim_b_3

 I thought this, nearly spat me brew out

I crossstiched my ds a hightchart and i've done this one too, it's great cos you can stich their heights on there every year so you have a little keep sake too

i bought material from john lewis and stitched the edges so they don't fray. I'm going to cross stitch in the corners a pic of a teddy bear-from hobbycraft. Not finished yet coz my carpal tunnel is stopping me!

well I have been inspired!! Have just ordered some patchwork squares from www.pelennapatchworks.co.uk
Haven't used them before but I couldn't find what I wanted on ebay and the prices here were great.
Have ordered some plain blues and patterned baby blues to do a quilt for my friend who is having a boy soon. Then I shall make one for my baby. Am on team yellow though so will have a think of colour combo's!!
Anyone else taking the plunge on a project??

Well I am going to use 5" squares. Going to do 4 or 5 squares across, then 6 squares down. They had some squares pre-cut to 5", but I ordered a long quarter of a materiel they didnt do pre-cut and from one long quarter can get 8 5" squares, plus a bit of off cut. Does that make sense?

Oh and had a thought, for the back of a patchwork blanket, I'm gonna get a fleece blanket from poundworld (I live near a huge one!) and use that for the back. They do one's that are moses/pram size.

If you dislike sewing (like I do, at times..) you can make a no sew fleece blanket.. easy peasy.. I got so excited after making my first one (because it was crazy easy), I really couldn't stop until almost every child in our family had one! :haha: There is just too many awesome fleece patterns -- there is something for everyone!!! I don't know.. just an idea. :) https://www.projectlinus.org/patterns/pdf/NoSewFB.pdf

I'm in the middle of this, I've been cross stitching for years but this one is pretty easy for beginners too.
