Hello. I began working in the emergency room around a year ago, and have had to help deliver the news of a lost pregnancy more than I care to think about. Having had a miscarriage myself, I can relate to the heartbreak they feel on a level. But, when it comes to comforting someone at that moment.. no one wants to hear “I know how you feel, this happened to me too”. I had a patient recently who affected me more than any others recently. And it’s made me want to do SOMETHING to help, even if it’s in a small way. So I’m asking anyone who heard the news of their loss in an emergency room, if you were given something like a blue and pink infant loss ribbon pin as a gesture of compassion.. how would you of felt?

I just found out on Christmas (9+2) that my baby's heart had stopped on the 15th/16th of this month (7+4). The ultrasound tech is the one that told me gently because I'd been through it so much previously (this is my 9th loss). The doctor walked in and was kind of unfeeling. They gave me nothing except a piece of paper and told me to follow up with my OB the next day.

That’s difficult to answer for sure, but I think it’s awesome that you want to be compassionate.

I think just having someone say, “I’m sorry for your loss,” and truly meaning it, would be nice. And if the moment is right, even a hug.

I can’t imagine how difficult your job is, but I wish other medical professionals sought to be as compassionate as you are.

I love that idea <3

Here, a charity now makes little boxes with a few items inside- a poem, candle, small teddy and list of helpline and websites that can offer support. I think the badge idea is lovely although not everyone wants the world to know theyve lost a baby. You sound really thoughtful and compassionate and I'm sure the patients will appreciate having you around and just offering a few words of comfort.

I lost a baby just before Christmas. There was a sort of white/stick tree that lit up and a basket full of butterfly decorations. The note said to place a butterfly on the tree to remember your little one. It was beautiful.

The ribbon or something sounds good. It's hard to walk away and you have nothing physical to show that your baby did exist. ESP if they don't tend to give out early scans pics at a loss.

Beautiful gift. I’m so sorry for your loss.
