Hey all one of the girls on the other threads has posted pictures of patchwork blankets/quilts she made but can anyone talk me through making them?

i have no idea what to buy? i will be sewing by hand as no machine???

idiots guide to this would be great :D

I started to make one but without a sewing machines its extremely hard. Im not waiting on my mum to lend me hers.
I cheated (as its my first go) and use bondaweb to attached the sqaures to a separate piece of white fabric. Im making the middle patchwork with a pink ribbon on teh edging then a white frame around it with more material.
Invest/borrow in a sewing machine or you cant really do it. :D

if you go into hobbycraft, they have leaflets which have FREE tutorials in them they're available instore. :)

Hand quilting is hard, but it's not impossible as lots of people do it. I tried it and just don't have the patience for it.

thanks guys i will need to find time to make it and get stuff together i made blankets and such through hand sewing before for my son just never done patchwork lol

It honestly is very simple. I have done 4 now and each 1 I did entirely by hand. I am now investing in a cheap sewing maching as will get it done quicker. I can make a patchwork quilt by hand in 3nights, with a machine i could do prob in a day.

nice sounds great could u give me a step by step walk through and list of stuff i would need etcs and what sizes of blankets u have made etc?

Ill do my best, so here goes:

What you need:

Pins
fabric or material you plan to use
wadding off the roll (can be bought in diff thicknesses)
needle
Cotton
Tape measure

What you need to do:

Choose the material or fabric you would like to use, you then need to decide what size squares you would like to do your patches in, maybe as its your first would be easier to do 5'' as these are slightly bigger but entirely up to you.

Measure and draw each square as accurate as possible and cut out each square individually, doesn't matter if they are not all exact same sizes as its patchwork and doesn't need to be perfect.

You will then have all your patches ready to pin together. I always think its best not to pin stacks together as can get confusing and also keep prickng yourself. You need to decide wheather you are going for a particular pattern or random, then lay them out into an open space to arrange them as you would like them.

Best to lay them upside down for the pinning bit and then sew the edges of each square about 5mm from the edge so they join and cannot be seen from the outside, this process is repeated for each square you pin and sew until complete.

The wadding:
You cut to the same size as the blanket you have made and will need to do stacks or mini tacs (stitches) all the way across the blanket to hold it in place so upon washing will not come loose or move about in time. I usually do a tac to each corner of the square and also takes some time but you don't have to do as many.

The backing:
Choose what colour material you want for back, measure and cut to size. You will need to do same process with the backing with sewing it as you did with the squares, so did the stitch all the way around the edge inside out only leaving a gap big enough towards the end of stitching to fit your hand in to beable to turn inthe right way out. You will then need to sew up the hole remaining with an inside stitch.

The inside stitch I still struggle with and the best thing to do for this is what I did, google how to inside stitch and watch a little video and it will show you close up step by step.

If you want to buy your patched already done here is a link for a lady I buy mine off of on ebay and shes cheap and sends them very quickly:

If you have any questions, ill do my best to answer and help you as much as I can
