Ideals/reality

I'm sure I'm not alone in this... who else had loads of ideals for how they'd bring up their baby, only to find reality different?
For example, I wanted to breastfeed, but have ended up formula feeding, I planned on not using a dummy but he has it at night, and I was gonna try the 'diaperless baby' thing but well, reality's shown just how little time I have and watching out for when he's about to poo just isn't high on my list :p

Yes me!!

I thought i was going to have the prefect family :rofl: we were all going to sit round and have sunday dinner LMAO! I thought i would change from my old ways and be 'grown up', i thought jacob was going to sleep all night :rofl:

Jacob is up all night, has a dummy, refuses milk, is very fussy eater :rofl: Im still me, i enjoy me wine in the evening (i thought i wouldnt have a glass when i was preg!) XxX

Me! I was so anti dummies but he has his at night and nap time. I wanted to do baking with him every friday like my Mum did with me and so far we've managed once!

:) i think every has a difference of ideal and reality :)

with my son i wanted to BF but only lasted 2 weeks, we managed BLW and baby wearing which was great. we started cosleeping which was great at the time but he is still in our bed LOL!

with Ffion i wanted to BF but only lasted 4.5months, i wanted to do homemade food but just havent had the time, didnt want to do dummys but we are doing too

us too! i too thought i'd become a 'step wife' and have lots of time to go for walks with the pram etc! i also wanted to bf, but had no milk.

in reality i spend quite a bit of time chasing my tail and doing lots of housework, ironing cleaning etc. cooking for james is pants as he comes in late! and i spent quite a lot of time in my pjs and joggers :blush: i suppose i don't have that much time for me!

I thought I'll work out a perfect little routine with Lola and be stern with her nap times and things.
In reality, the girl never naps and we don't really have a routine other than at bedtime.

If there is a next time for me the only thing I'll plan it not to make any plans :lol:

Yeah, I wanted to be such an earth mother but in reality I am really really not!! I said no dummies and we tried to give Liv one (although she didn't take it!) wanted to BF and did for a week but then went to FF, etc etc but I am happy and so is Liv!!!

I agree with Amy - no pre-planning with the next one!

I managed to not give her a dummy but only because she won't let me =D

I never had very set, rigid things I wanted to do but I did have ideas on what I wanted, and so far I've stuck to them.

Niamh:

* uses a sling more than a pram
* wears cloth (real) nappies
* BFs (though we're having a rocky patch just now)
* doesn't use a dummy
* co-slept at first
* got into a bedtime routine asap

We're now looking at starting baby signing in a couple of months. :)

Wow, thank you so much! What age did you start? Any books you recommend?

I was thinking of starting in a couple of months. Just signing as I do things, not that I expect her to pick it up for awhile.

we started signing when my son was 6 months, he didnt start signing back until 10 months though. its the kind of thing where you dont really see results straight away and then all of a sudden it clicks with your child and they pick tonnes up at once.

we started with 4 simple signs... Milk, More, All gone and Food

the sign for milk is squeezing your hand open and shut like youre milking a cow
the sign for More is making your left hand into an upright fist (like your going to do a thumbs up but without the thumb lol) and placing your right hand flat on top of it
the sign for all gone is making both hands into upright fists and putting them together.. then pulling them apart sharply, opening them as you do it
the sign for food is tapping the side of your mouth 2/3 times with your fingers shaped like a ducks beak (if that makes sense!!!)

i would only use one sign per sentence.. say the word slowely and exaggerate the sign at the same time.

when Ffion was born we started going to our local sing and sign class, we did two terms, stage 1 and stage 2. its really good for babies but rhys being 17months already got bored really quickly.

on cbeebies is a show called something special, its a baby signing programme and its FAB i really do recomend it for anybody who does baby sign :)

sorry for the essay! any more questions just ask

I'm the same re breastfeeding and dummies. I planned to BF for 6 months and I didn't manage it properly past 2 days :( and I planned not to give him a dummy and he had one of those from 2 days old! I also thought I would never co-sleep but it seems the older he gets the more time he spends in our bed! Though I do love the cuddles x

With the older two ive had different things ive said im def going to do and i failed on most of them!!
This time i thought Harry was going to be my last one so i have done everything that i wanted to do, im now the breastfeeding, babywearing, home baking earth mummy i always wanted to be x

Im with you girls!

1) i planned to BF for 6months....i lasted 2.5weeks!!
2)Thought id have time to take her for a walk everyday!...Only manage every other day as theres always something that needs doing!
3)Thought id have time to do a hour of exercise every morning...Not happening once again theres always something that needs doing!
4)Said she wasnt going to have a dummy...she sleeps with one!
5) said i wouldnt rush to her every time she cries or makes a sound!...i run to her as soon as she cries!

shes only 3weeks old so im guessing theres going to be alot more that doesnt go my way!

I planned on BF for at least 6 months, but it only lasted 1 month! I just couldn't keep up with how hungry Kathryn was, so we supplemented with formula, then she only wanted the bottle, and it was such a hassle to pump, I'd be on the pump for 15 min and only get 1oz! And the other thing I've had trouble with is sticking to a routine. It's tough because a) I can't get Kathryn on a consistent nap schedule. If she's not tired she just wont go down no matter what I do. and b) me and my DH share a car, so I have to drive him too and from work, and his schedule is not fixed (he works at the apple store and he does sales and personal training so the time depends what he's doing what days). Also I always said she'd watch barely any tv, but it's the only way I can get anything done! And I only let her watch when she's in her jumperoo, so at least she's being active. I also we do let her watch her Baby Einstein dvd in the morning so I can stay in bed untill 7:30 or 8. I just can't get up untill then.

Hi. I always said while I was pregnant that I would not use a dummy. But after a few weeks my midwife said that he sucked for comfort and that he may not be hungry as he used to suck for few minutes then fall asleep( I was BF then) The day after he was born while I was in hospital one of the midwifes said to me that he was a sucky baby and that I bet I ended up giving him a dummy. He uses his dummy to sleep and now I really dont know why I was bothered about him having one. xx

Well with kaidayn i wanted to bf for 6 months im still doing it but having a hard time at night unless i give him a formula bottle .... then he sleeps:) but other then that i pump and still bf i didnt want to give him a dummy but we have one for him he will take it sometimes but spits it out usally sleepin in our bed after his first wake in the night.
