...when do you pay them back? (straight away, next tax year?)
and how? (Instalment's/ lump sum / reduction of future tax credits?)

Currently OH doesn't work and we are going to give them an estimated lower figure for the new tax year as I'm on mat leave. But if OH gets a job a couple of months in our entitlement is going to change and they will have over paid us. Dependant on when we have to pay the potential overpayment back, and if it is in instalments will make a real difference to the jobs OH can get as if he takes on fixed term, or temporary work and is then out of work again the difference in WTC will mean we can't manage financially.

Does anyone have any experience with being overpaid and then paying them back?

Well as they dont pay you in a LUMP sum it should be fine as you will get the monies you were entitled to for that period. They may just recalc it and then take off the over payment (if any) then calculate the weekly/monthly payments

they wont overpay you, when oh gets a job call them and they will adjust the claim effective immediatly

they usually take it out of any future payments if they over pay you x

As said above they take it off future claims, unless you go from a joint claim to a single claim.
I had a joint claim with my ex, we split found out we had been overpaid both got bills in for half the over payment. I asked for them to take it off my new single claim but apparently they cant!!!!
So each week they pay me money that i then pay back to them haha totally stupid if you ask me!!
