If you are a twin, are you more likely to have twins?

I'd really love to have twins. I'm a twin but it isn't a common gene in my family. I don't know of any other sets. My mum said that there were 2 sets of twins on her side years and years ago, before she was even alive but none since, until me and my brother arrived. My dad says he has twins on his side as well although I'm not sure where as most of his family live in Ireland and I've never met most of them.

My husband, however, has no twins that he knows of in his family. So I want to know if I would be more likely to have twins myself? I've heard the gene carries down through the man's side but I thought twins happened when the woman releases two eggs in her cycle and they get fertilised by 2 sperm (for non identical anyway). I'm not sure that's even right or if it's one egg that splits (but then I think that is how identical twins are made). So can anyone help?

I was like this, I was even asking to go on Clomid just to give me the chance!

My mums dad was a twin, then she had my twin sisters...

I thought it just skipt every other generation?

xxx

Im nowhere near clever at this, but as far as i thought, non identical twins run through the family from the female side as like u sed it means releasing 2 eggs on the same cycle. So as your a twin Im sure your chances of having twins is higher? xxx

Well I just did a bit of research and twins skipping a generation is apparently a myth. And come to think of it, my nextdoor neighbour's mum (or was it dad?) was a twin and so were her parents. I also remember my friend's ex-boyfriend being a twin and his dad was.

From looking on wikipedia, unless I'm reading it wrong, it seems that to have non identical twins, it is 2 eggs being released and both being fertilised by 2 different sperm. Now, as my mind is alway in overdrive and I think lots of random things all the time, it made me wonder, if you had sex with one guy and he fertilised one of your eggs then had sex immediately after with another guy and his sperm fertilised the other egg, then you'd have 2 different fathers for your twins. I'm sure this isn't possible to happen but it made me wonder. Not that I'm ever contemplating sleeping with another man (one is enough for me!) but some people do!

The twin gene travels through the female side. It skips a generation or two every time. If your grandmother had twins then there's a higher chance you will.

Yes, I think your chances of having twins are higher because you are a twin.

I know of someone is a twin and she went on having twin daughters. There are two sets of twins in my Mum's side of family. My grandma had twin sisters. Then her daughter (my aunt) gave birth to twins of different sex. So it skipped a generation.

How weird would that be, to have non identical twins with 2 different fathers!

Thats weird! Lol
My sisters are identical, not sure if my grandad was though! lol xx

well my best friend is not a twin but her babys father is he is an identical twin and my friend went on to have identical twins with him, i think the gene is more common from the man side if he a twin rather than women (no idea why) and when a woman releases 2 eggs and both are fertilized then yes u have twins but unidentical twins and i dnt think the unidentical twin things is actually genetic must look that up again to be sure think it just by chance the ovarie actually releases 2 eggs rather than 1, i do hope u get ur wish and get twins hun PMA xxxxxxxxxxxx

So do I. I'd just love it. My friend kept saying "you wouldn't want to have 2, 1 is hard enough work". But I would love it. When my mum found out she was pregnant with twins, she was shocked beyond belief! But the midwife there told her that she'd had twins and it's actually easier than having one. Whereas when you have 1 child, you have to play with them all the time, they just play with each other. And my mum said it's totally true. She fed us at the same time and had no problems. Maybe we were just good children, which I certainly made up for in my teenage years!!

Lol my mum found out she was having twins at her 18 week scan! She was like, but... iv just bought one of everything! lol

But then a year later she had my brother, so really it was like raising triplets!

xx

My Grandmother was a twin. Sadly her sister passed away soon after they were born.

I'd love for twins one day.

My mum and her sister (my auntie) are non identical twins, and said Auntie has had Identical twin boys. I was always told they skipped a generation but i guess thats a myth. Also they are two different types of twin. Non identical is the release of 2 eggs at a time so that must be a genetic trait maybe? and Identical is more of a fluke kinda thing isnt it? You can tell im not a biologist! haha.

i am from a set of fraternal twins. Sadly my brother died just before our birth. I will send you the twin dust i have cause i will absolutely die if i have two! lol.

it made me wonder, if you had sex with one guy and he fertilised one of your eggs then had sex immediately after with another guy and his sperm fertilised the other egg, then you'd have 2 different fathers for your twins. I'm sure this isn't possible to happen but it made me wonder. Not that I'm ever contemplating sleeping with another man (one is enough for me!) but some people do!

It has happened - woman having one white baby and one coloured one by different fathers!

im an identical twin & i have identical twin brothers too. so far none of us have had twins, id love them though x

Standard twins are when two eggs get implanted at the same time. Identical twins are from where the same egg gets implanted by two sperm. Yes its poss to have twins to diff men, but you would need to have :sex: with them both within a very close amount of time.

twins do come from the female side , it goes from the releasing of eggs , altho identical twins come from 1 egg , the male side determines the sex of the baby , my nana was a twin , my mum had twins , then i had twins which doctors said were mirror imaged , now 1 of my twins is on her 2nd pregnancy , the midwife seems to think she is having twins this time , i always believed twins skipped a generation , so would like to know if any1 actually knows if they do skip a generation

My aunt on my moms side had twins .. my aunts on my dads side are twins , My fiances mom had twin boys wich she miscaried and his sister was a twin but the other baby didint make it . my fiances sister had two kids but no twins. I asked our doctor if he thought we could have twins and he said it has nothing to do with the man .. its all about if the women releases two eggs or if the egg splits . It depends if you have a hyper ovulation gene . I found online .. If twins is on your husbands side it wont infulence you chances your husband's family history has absoultely no bearing on your own children, except maybe for the future possibility that you might have twin grandchildren ( if you child is a girl )! If your mother -- or your grandmother or aunt -- was or had fraternal twins, then you might have the gene.
