Increasing male fertility

Hi everyone

Found this interesting site that has links to studies which demonstrate the effects of taking supplements to improve male fertility:

Hi peacebaby,

This is very interesting, thanks for posting it. We haven't done a SA yet, but it's in the near future. What I found interesting was the l-carnitine. My DH has been taking 1g for a while now. This says 3g, though. I wasn't giving it to him for TTC, but just as a healthy supplement. So it's interesting to see that it helps with TTC.

Also the fatty acids: I read that the tails of sperm are practically made out of omega-3 fatty acids. And with all this low-fat hysteria, men probably aren't getting what they need. I personally believe in a good dose of daily cod liver oil.

I can't say I agree with the red meat part, though. I believe that if you are eating beef fed on GM corn and raised with growth hormones, then that's bad. GM soy has been shown to absolutely destroy fertility in lab hamsters and rats. People used to eat plenty of beef and didn't have these problems. It's not the red meat itself. I believe normal, ranged beef is a healthy source of protein and nutrients for humans.

There must be a reason (!!) why sperm counts have fallen by at least half in the last 50 years. I resent the doctors and articles that blame a low sperm count only on the man himself. Most of this is not his fault, but is due to toxic environmental factors he didn't create. Maybe making lifestyle changes will boost counts just enough to get his partner pregnant, after awhile, but the overall poor sperm quality across the board is not because of anything a man did or didn't do. JMO.

Hi AL

it will be interesting to see your OH's results since his been on the L-carnitine. I read the same about the swimmers tails being of high omega3 content and I agree with you re: environmental factors and food simply not being as nutritious, wholesome and pure as in the past. it's the same with us ladies which is why so many of us across the geographical board are having to deal with hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues etc.

good luck with your tests and hoping the New Year holds good news for you !

Maca is meant to be very good for boosting male fertility xx

Well, we won't know if the carnitine helped or not because he's never had a SA before to compare it to. Definitely the increased thyroid problems are environmental. My problem is low progesterone. I feel frustrated because I don't know why this started, doctor seems stumped too.

Here's hoping for good news for all of us in 2012. :flower:

Hi there,

My dh started taking supplements in April this year and after 8 months of taking them, the results are quite remarkable.

In March his count was 20 million but of those only 400,000 were normal (she didn't give me the breakdown of the results as it was done through the NHS). He then had another April and the results were the same.

We then got him taking the following:

1000mg vitamin C
Extra high-strength cod liver oil
75mg Co-Enzyme Q10
Fertility Plus for men (1 to be taken 3 times per day) - check here for ingredients (on the lower left of the pic): https://www.naturalhealthpractice.c...ign=PPCownLG&gclid=CO3kpfHaoK0CFWIntAodRBTdlg

So he is basically taking 1 of everything apart from the Fertility plus which he takes 3 times per day.

He then had a semen analysis this week (i.e. after taking those vits for 8months) and the results are as follows:

Count has gone from 20 million to 78 million
Motility: 56%
Morphology: 6%
Volume: 1ml

I did a lot of research before putting him on those vitamins but I am glad that I did because it really has worked. I heard that the only thing I need to add now is vitamin E, which should be taken along with Vitamin C. I need to do more reading on that though as there are some studies which suggest that vitamin E could be dangerous when taken in larger quantities.

hi imaan

thanks for sharing that, excellent results

Most of the reading and research confirms what you've got your hubby on. About the vit E though many naturopaths say that it helps to prevent chromosonal abnormalities. I have a book here by Kitty Campion, one of the UK's most notable herbalist and she says vit e is vital for this reason.

I think I might get some of the fertility plus for dh.

best wishes and good luck, may you be blessed with a little one soon.

Hi hun thanks :flower: we are over the moon with the results too. After viewing that link: https://sites.google.com/site/misca...oost-fertility/how-to-increase-male-fertility , I also wanted to get my dh on Vit E but feel slightly reluctant as it says on that site, "Combining high doses of Vitamin C and Vitamin E does not improve sperm quality and induces sperm DNA damage; protective effect is found when only one or the other is taken". So now I'm unsure that to do as he is already on 1000mg of vitamin C.

There is a guy on another site who interprets semen analyses and offers advice and he recommended taking vitamin E in high doses (i.e. 400mg) along with vitamin C.... but recent studies have found that high doses of vitamin E have lead to early death in the older generation... so now I'm totally confused

Thank you so much for sharing!! We are dealing with MFI and DH is taking many of the supplements mentioned. I plan on buying pycnogenol and increasing his maca and Vit C.

yes, I read that first study too re: vit e and vit c. However, I've also read that various fertility specialists use both in their treatment protocols (like Dr Randine Lewis from the US). I was also a bit confused about it and would like to look into it further. I would say though that since vit c seems to be working for your dh perhaps it would be best to continue, what do you think?

you're welcome :flower:

good luck, hoping the supplements work well for you, let us know how it goes.

I agree, it is confusing. Something is definately working although his morphology is still very low at 6% so I was hoping to add something to give it a boost. Maybe if he countinues with what he's already taking, it will improve. I heard that we should expect to see improvements every 3 months since it takes that length of time to manufacture new sperm.

All the best with yours :flower:

I think I might get some of the fertility plus for dh.

Go for it hun. The only downside is that it is costly for pay that every month (but I guess if it works it will work out a lot cheaper in the long run)... but don't buy it directly from their website, do a search via google to find the cheapest you can get your hands on. Oh, and don't be concerned by the fact that it makes it pee neon yellow :haha: apparently that's the body getting rid of vitamin B that it doesn't need.

We are not sure if my dh's sperm increase was due to those vitamins alone or the combination of those plus the high-strength cod liver oil, Q10 and Vitmanin C. I did a lot of reading before putting him on those though and those were the ones that were important. I read the Dr.s book (the one who produced Fertility Plus) and it's recommended to take Vitmin C in addition to the Fertility Plus.

Just read the link, very thorough article, seems to suggest choosing between C or E. Thanks for posting. My hubby is taking wellman conception which I think contains most of the supplements and has given up alcohol completely so this article is reassuring and looks like we are on the right track :)
