Hi, so I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this before and what causedit/helped?

My baby is 2 weeks old today, he is ebf. He is incredibly gassy. I wind him during and after a feed for ages and he burps a lot, I do it for a long amount of time until I think he's burped enough. But even afterwards he is scrunching his legs up in pain and trumping a lot. He has explosive poos (I know this is pretty normal with a bf baby) sorry for tmi but it's yellow and seedy like normal but I think it may w a bit diarrhoea-ish as well as it's very watery as well.

He is worse at night with gas. He curls up in pain and can't seem to settle he seems to want to be fed but than he fusses at the breast (this is really only at night that he fusses he doesn't in the day)... He feeds constantly on and off at night.

I am in two minds about whether I have an overactive let down as I know I have a lot of milk and jt sprays out quite fast and I can hear him gulping quite a bit. However he never seems to choke or anything?

I'm not sure if it's just because his stomach is developing and getting used to milk or if it's because of my fast flowing milk or because of something im eating.

Is this normal? A lot of people question me when I wind him as most people say a breastfed baby doesn't need to be winded but he is ridiculously gassy and uncomfortable.

I never had this issue with my daughter and I breastfed her for 7 months exclusively.

I am going to go to my breastfeeding peer support group tomorrow but do you think they'll be able to offer any advice?

Thanks

This sounds exactly like my 3 week old, after almost 2 weeks of zero sleep at night my HV suggested trying colic drops.

We've tried gripe water & infacol which helped bring up wind but they weren't helping his tummy pains so we've recently switched to colief and last night he was a different baby! We both actually got sleep!!

I have an oversupply and strong let down, I have to say I have been tempted to switch to FF a few times but we've carried on and finally have light at the end of the tunnel

I'd recommend trying them to see if they make a difference for you

Thanks for your reply :) yes I definitely did think about colic but he doesn't cry in pain, does your baby cry in pain?
I'll give them a go thanks x

Totally normal Yes my EBF DD went through this and I also had OALD/Oversupply until about 3 months. She was gassy w/ green explosive poo occasionally for about a month which the doc said was just due to her age/development of GI system. She eventually was fine but we use gripe water and gas drops occasionally and they help a lot. Also bicycling legs and rubbing tummy helped her. I avoided spicy and fatty things until about 2 months too but I don't think it was necessary in hindsight. She is occasionally gassy now but is generally much better now at 4 mo.

Your baby sounds like my baby but mine is bottle fed (she wouldn't latch) she is allergic to cows milk, she used to pull legs up, very very gassy etc. Your baby could be the same. You could try going dairy free for a month to see if things improve? Failing that your baby could have reflux/silent reflux if not being sick a lot. Just a thought for you to consider.

My baby was almost exactly the same, she's now 4 weeks. I did some research and realised she might have lactose overload (different to intolerance), so I tried block feeding her and it helped a lot. Basically the baby gets more lactose in one go than they can handle. Foremilk has more lactose than hindmilk, so you need to make sure they get the hindmilk by feeding just from one side for a while (2-4 hours is generally recommended). If you Google lactose overload you can find more info.

He doesn't cry which is why I didn't think of colic either but you could see that he was clearly uncomfortable and couldn't settle for sleep unless he was upright on lying on one of us

He does get overtired easily and that then leads to hours of crying before he finally gives in so I have to watch him closly and get him down before it's too late which is easier said then done with a toddler in the house!

I'm going thru this with my lo, she sounds in pain and strains quite alot and i struggle to get her wind up or she ends up with hiccups. We've been using infacol which works a little. Iv heard of colief do u just put it in baby's mouth like infacol?
I remember my dd having bad wind, it's awful I just want to take it all away xx

Colief is a bit more fussy, it has to be added to milk and given before a feed

I express 3oz on a morning and then before each feed add the colief to 5ml and give via a syringe.

It is a faff but has made a huge difference to us, I'm trying to get my GP to prescribe it but that's another challenge in itself!

3 of my 4 babies were ebf and extremely gassy. I have figured it out with my 3 month old now. I have cut out all dairy and its almost resolved 100%. She still has some gas but she's not in pain. I started cutting out all obvious dairy and noticed a difference after about 3-4 days.

I second this post. I cut out all dairy and my little guy wasn't nearly as gassy as he was. Now he just passes wind every once in a while and he isn't in agony doing it :)

I have 2 boys with my first i breastfed for 7 months and he had colic really bad, we tryed everything but colief which i have heard really helps but it is expensive. This time with my second im breastfeeding and he doesnt have colic hes so different its alot easier, so i do really feel for you. We used to use gripe water which helped a little (only can be given 4 weeks onwards) x

My little one was extremely gassy and in pain untili cut out dairy. Was same with my daughter and she's still very intolerant to dairy at nearly 3
