hello,

long story short, i have PCOS, DH SA normal, TTC #1 for 2yrs 8mnts, been seeing gyno for 2 yrs 1 mnth, finally got referral for IVF after MONTHS and months of pushing for one.

so we got our letter with our appointment through 4 days ago and we have forms (lots of forms) to fill out, our appointment is in 3 weeks and i couldn't be happier that we have gotten this far. but i am worried. i have no idea about what happens at this consultation. my mind is blank about questions to ask and what we should know before we go for our consultation. and there are all these statistics that have come in the pack they sent and i have no idea what would relate to us!

i would love it if i could get some advice from someone that has been through it or is going through it. i have done a lot of research about IVF but there is not much out there about the initial consultation and what happens after that. i know that there is a wait after the apt to when you actually start treatment, but what happens at the apt and between apt and treatment? do they have an information seminar type thing or an open evening? is there tests that we need to go through before the approve us suitable for treatment? how do we know if we are getting funding or not and if we are, then for how many rounds?

i should say that we are getting treated at ninewells in dundee scotland, but live in the western isles of scotland.

thank you for your time and i hope i have made sense...

Hi
Good luck for your appointment. It's different at every clinic and will depend upon what tests you have had done so far.
My first couple of appointments were really basic - they did various blood tests for hormone levels at the first appt. The second one we talked about those results and the cons said that IVF would be the route to go down. Then we booked an information session with the nurse - this was the most helpful one. We went through the process of what would happen in great detail. Got all my medications and lots of literature to read through. She was really helpful and knowledgeable about everything that was going to happen.
TBH I only saw the consultant twice in the whole process. It was really the nurses who did all of the appointments.
That's my experience anyway.Dunno how helful that is!
Good luck for your upcoming appt. Hope it goes well. xx

At ours we had already had various tests done with the GP.

Our first appt consisted of basic information sharing and then securing an appt for me to have an HSG and DH to have a further SA. We came back 3 months later to go over the results and were then put on the NHS waiting list.

At the private clinic we had an hour consultation and were told we could start straight away.

Best of luck :hugs:

that's very helpful thank you. i was told that the waiting list is 3 months for my area. i've not seen the consultant yet but i have emailed the business manager about a few queries about the forms we have to fill in just now - and while i was asking questions i asked about the waiting time, and she said 3 months! i am assuming that is 3 months after the first consultation. but even so it is still quicker than going private in my area.

i am just wondering what i should be prepared for, what information should we be asking for and what information will they be wanting from us. i know that they will be taking blood samples from us, but what else will the be wanting.

from what i can gather they are going to do all the tests (unless i need a lap&dye, in which case i would need a separate apt.) and do more form filling out and such, then we will be back for a second apt where they will give us the results and decide on the right treatment. then 3 months later we will start treatment. but i get the feeling that there is a snag in there somewhere, it all sounds to good to be true, or maybe i should just enjoy the ride?

I'm guessing each PCT is different, mine wanted an HSG done which they scheduled st our first appt. I'd had my day 3 & 21 bloods done which were fine & we were referred due to MF issues.

They just went through our medical history, decided on what tests they'd like done further & then put us on the waiting list when we came back.

3 months is fantastic, mine was 18 months so we gave up
& went private!

If you want to be prepared ring your FS & ask them what you need to bring. If they want your passport itll be an indicator they'll register you then but if not you'll be preggers by summer I'm sure! :dust:

My first appt hubby had a SA and I got an internal ultrasound to look at my lining, my remaining tube and ovaries and count how many follicles I had. He talked a bit about our options and then we met with the nurse who explained things in detail and gave me a time line and schedule and reffered us to a genetic counsler. After that we met with the financial counsler and luckily my insurance covers quite a bit.
