We found out on Friday (10/10) that we are having a baby boy!
We have a name that we like, but the initials spell M.O.M...
The name had meaning though.
Mycal (husband's middle name). Oliver (my dad & grandfather's first name). Martin (our last name).

A few people (family, friends & people we barely know) have made comments about what his initials will be. I don't want this to be an issue for our son if we can prevent it.
I mean if adults notice it and questions how bad will it be with other kids?

I'm just looking for opinions on this subject.

Personally I don't think it is a big deal. I guess he may get made fun of every so often when it comes up (but I would hope in a jokey, rather than mean way!)... But how often does your middle name come up?

If you are really worried, why not add a second middle name? Ie. he could be Mycal Oscar Thomas Martin- initials M.O.T.M. Etc.

Good luck! ...and for what it is worth, I think Mycal Oscar is a great name!!

I considered adding a second middle name... I think I'll mention the idea to my husband.
I really do love the name.
Thanks so much for the input!

I think MOM is one of the better things to spell out. It's better than LOADS of other 3 letter words..
I think it's fine :)

Oh yeah I know it could be a whole bunch of other things! Lol

Thanks so much. :)
I'm feeling better about it already :)

I wouldn't worry about it at all- MOM is fine! But I like someone else's suggestion to add a second middle name, if you are worried about it.

I only just realised the other day that one of my friend's initials spell out ASS. Haha I had a giggle. But initials don't come up very often in life. They said it was never really an issue. Once in primary school people found out but he said it blew over quickly.

I agree with the second middle name - that was going to be my reply before I read the other post. I have had jobs before where you have to initial everything and for a boy/man that could result in jokes. but if it is molm or whatever it would be fine.

I don't think it matters, MOM isn't anything bad. So if anyone notices this is how it's going to play out :

Random person: "Haha your initials spell MOM"
Mycal: "Yeah, so?"

End of conversation.

Yeah I don't think there is anything to worry about. I'd just avoid profanities as initials, but even then it's not terrible (as PP said about "ASS") but I agree that I actually do use my initials moreso than you'd think - when signing documents at work, doctors, schools, etc. they also ask for your initials. Of course he could also use MM instead of MOM but either way I think it's completely fine.
I do think Oscar Mycal sounds nice too, if that's an option

I wouldn't worry about that, like a pp said, there are far worse. I know someone who named her child who ended up with the initials 'FAK' that's cutting it a bit fine to the F word IMO x

It really depends- how often do you really use your initials, it depends on your job I suppose? I would switch it about so his initials are OMM or MMO if it bothers you that much :) Lovely names though

Why not switch the 1st and middle name?

We don't want to have three Oliver's running around. My grandfather is Oliver Sr. & my dad is Oliver Jr. So we wanted to use that name as his middle name. But I think we will consider adding a second middle name :)
Thanks for the input!

Yepp if we change it at all, we will add a second middle name :)

It just worries me because adults are already noticing it. I hope it won't be too much of an issue for our lil guy!

^^ Love the come back :)

Yeah that's cutting to too close IMO too. It could definitely be much worse!

Thanks for everyone's replies & input!

I have a cousin whose initials spell something much worse...like I've wondered how her parents didn't notice that before. It's bad, but I mean, as far as I know no one has given here trouble about it. Full initials don't even come up that often, most commonly when you initial you just put first and last initial. Only rarely do I use my full initials.

completely agree with this!

Can I just ask what the problem with MOM is? Do you mean because it's like mum or mother? I don't get why that is an issue tbh...

Excuse me if there's some other glaringly obvious association that I've missed!

My DD's initials are CAK. We didn't notice until she was already named, but my brother in law finds it hilarious lol. I still love her name regardless. For a boy my husband and I wanted either Ethan Eugene or Eli Eugene...either way his initials would be EEK. lol I thought it was funny but didn't change my opinion on the names. If you really are concerned the suggestion of adding another middle is a great idea. maybe another family name or the name of a close friend.

I don't really think it matters. It's not like it's offensive or anything. My lo's initials are FANG...
