Hey all,

Just after a bit of advice, I'm going for an internal scan tomorrow as I'm only 6week (lmp date) and lost a little blood. Thing is doc rang to book the scan while I was there so I was of course listening to what they was saying. Now I'm 90% sure I heard her say tell her to have a full bladder for it but I been on Google and so many say u need to have an empty bladder so now I'm unsure? It's one done with nhs not private.

If it's an internal scan, you want an empty bladder. If it's an abdominal scan, you want a full bladder.

I had my first internal scan yesterday and the sonographer told me to make sure I emptied my bladder, even if it felt like I didn't have to go. She also told me that if I were having an abdominal scan, they would want a full bladder.

Hope this helps!

Yup. Definitely an empty bladder! At least that's how my office runs it.

Or just go with a full bladder and ask to be sure. They'll let you drain that bladder if you need to. Plus, that will ensure you get it all out! :haha:

Go with a full bladder as instructed because they may do an abdominal first, and then do transvaginal second.

With my first u/s that's what happened with me. I didn't know I would have to have a transvaginal though.

So what will happen is they will get all the pictures they can while doing an abdominal scan. U/s tech will let you empty your bladder, and then they will do a transvaginal, which will repeat the same pictures but it's more in depth as it will be easier to see baby.

When I had my first internal ultrasound, I thought you had to have a full bladder for them to see the baby better. So I went in about to pee my pants :haha: The tech had me go to the bathroom and empty it when she saw how full my bladder was. You could always go in with a full bladder and ask, and just go to the bathroom if they say it needs to be empty

Empty bladder is better for internal. Maybe worth having a bm too as I had an internal at 6 weeks horribly constipated and the sons graphed mentioned it made it a bit trickier.

In our EPU they always ask for a urine sample when you arrive and I've never seen them do anything with the sample so I am sure it is just so you go and empty your bladder! Have a drink before going then ask when you arrive and you can go pee if required then you've covered all the bases.

I've had about 13 transvaginal ultrasounds now and really they are fine occasionally a little uncomfortable but nowhere near as horrid as a smear test
x

You could always call to clarify. With my scan at 6 weeks, they did want me to have a full bladder--that was because they first did the external ultrasound. I'd call though to ask.

definitely go with a full bladder its a lot easier to empty than it is to fill lol, and they will try abdominal first if this isn't possible they will tell you to empty your bladder and then do transvaginal ive had 3 transvaginal in the last 4-5 weeks and this has been the procedure each time good luck huni I hope everything goes ok for you :) X

Out of curiosity was that 6week from lmp or ov and if lmp what was the scan like did u see a heartbeat? I'm not sure what to expect although I know babys only gonna be small.

Hi I do ultrasounds and often they will look over the belly first and that you need a full bladder for-then they will have you empty bladder and do the internal :)

Well it defo looks like full bladder is the way to go then I was pretty sure that's what I heard her say but I just didn't think. She told the doc to tell me but he didn't he wrote everything down except that lol fx I will get a nice pic to post tomorrow

When I went to EPU they did a pregnancy test on the sample straight away as they told me the results before the scan. If you (OP) have had bleeding they might want to do the same so worth being able to produce something!

Most of my 6 week scans (since LMP) have show a little white blob (baby) inside dark/black coloured fluid. The blob may or may not have a heart beat it usually starts sometime between 6-7 weeks. Lovely to see the HB if it's there but don't panic if it isn't! They will measure the size of the blob/baby and check the size compared to how far along you think you are.
In my case they also check my ovaries and tubes as I have had a previous ectopic so I don't know if they do that for everyone x
