Hey Ladies,

Been through alot the past 2 weeks. Well 11 days ago had a scan that showed an irregular shaped sac and no baby or heartbeat. I took it that it was to early (LMP 6/15/10) and that maybe all will be well. But when the report of the scan was faxed to my midwife, she said per the report from the she was sorry to say that it looked like a blighted ovum:cry:. I was devestated. She told me she wanted to give my body a chance to pass it naturally and if not she would schedule for a D&E.

Needless to say my pregnancy symptoms since then have skyrocketed. I have extreme morning sickness and my boobs are huge and very sore(sorry tmi). Went in to her office today to schedule my D&E and I told her this and she looked puzzled. She said my symptoms should be dimenishng not progresssing. So she sent me for a stat scan for a ? missed abortion. Needless to say right there on the screen was my little angel with a very strong heartbeat. What concerns me as that she says shes hopeful because there is a heartbeat but concerned of the irregular shape of my sac. Has anyone every heard of this. I have read online that some pregnancies due go on to full term and unfortunately some don't. Can someone please give me some feedback. I followup with her again next week for another scan just to make sure my angel still looks good and to monitor the shape of my sac.

Please don't read and run I could really use you input.

Thanks

didnt want to read and run, i have never heard nor experienced this but i googled it to see what i could find for you that would give you some peace of mind....

My understanding is that it depends on if there is a baby.

Mostly if there is an irregular sac, it indicated that the baby is not developing within the sac - a condition known as blighted ovum. If this is so, then your pregnancy will definitely miscarry.

BUT if you have an irregular sac, but the fetal pole and heartbeat are visible, there is a high chance the pregnancy will continue.

i see from your posting that your baby and heartbeat was found on scan so its looking good for you....hope this helps :hugs:

Sort of similar story for me- I had bleeding and a scan at 5w 5d showed a sac but no baby, the doctor told me the sac didn't look good and was very little chance the baby would grow but they would scan me one more time. By 6w 6d, the baby was there with a heart beat and the sac was 'perfect'- so I think they do right themselves.

Good luck and look forward to seeing your baby again! X

Hi,

I just wanted to post a positive post on here (or at least its positive at the moment). At 6wk 2days I started spotting and was terrified. Before I started spotting I had tummy pains and cramps and spoke to my doctor who told me to monitor it, so when I saw blood it was my worst nightmare coming true. I called the doctor and I managed to get an appointment at the hospital in the EPU where they scanned me. During the scan the sonographer found the baby and picked up a strong heartbeat although she wasnt happy as she said I had an irregular shaped sac. She couldnt be certain but did speculate there was a possibility I was carrying twins and had miscarried one - but this was not confirmed. I spoke to the sister in charge after and she was incredibly negative and I left with little hope. She basically said I had a 50/50 chance but was very sorry. I asked if people with an irregular shaped sac ever go on to have a normal pregnancy and she refused to answer the question. This was 6 days before my wedding and 8 days before my honeymoon so I had an appointment for 16 days later. I came home and researched 'irregular shaped sacs' and I can honestly say 99% of what I read was negative. I was terrified and on the Sunday I bled some more (it was brown blood though - which is safer than red blood).

Everyday I was scared when I went to the toilet and I thankfully had no more bleeding. I felt very ill but still felt pregnant, which was good. I married on the Thurs and went on honeymoon on the Saturday. On the Monday of our honeymoon I fainted and was admitted to the onboard doctor on our cruise ship - he wanted me to get off and go to the nearest hospital for a scan. My blood pressure was very, very low, my blood sugars were low and I felt really, really ill. Although I still hadnt bled at all since the previous Sunday. My partner and I were really worried although the doctor on board thought I just had dehydration I wanted to be certain about the baby so we travelled to the closest airport and flew home. As soon as I returned home I called the EPU to get an earlier scan - I spoke to the same nurse as before. She said, 'You have an irregular shaped sac, I told you the chances of survival were slim. Take a tablet and wait to bleed'. I was devastated. The next day (I was 8wks and 2 days) I returned to the hospital to discover that the baby was developing perfectly!! My sac had returned to normal and the baby had a strong heartbeat. So…for all you people who are researching this subject and are reading the same negative things I read – have faith and sometimes if things are meant to be they will be. My story is positive and hopefully your will be too.
