Is Banjo for a middle name too goofy?

My husband plays the banjo, and he would love to use it for a middle name, if we were to have a boy. The first name is decided- Gideon. Someone I know told me it was really cute, and she seemed genuine. Another person acted like I was totally kidding and like it was the dumbest thing she heard. What do you think??

Gideon is cute but imo, banjo is a little odd. Not my taste but to each their own.

My first boyfriend had a cat called Banjo. I thought it was pretty odd even for a cat...

I think it's cute because of the personal meaning behind it. He'll not have to use it if he doesn't want to because it's only a middle name. I'd go for it! Xxxx

I'd use it! I wouldn't as a first name but as a middle name I would. If you're worried maybe he could have 2 middle names and that could be his 2nd, that way if he felt embarassed he could just go by his first name and first middle name.

I think with middle names almost anything goes! Banjo is fine. Not for me but not too weird or anything.

I'm more in line with the second reaction you got.

I've always thought middle names should be fun, funky, unique, personal, special, and/or any combo of these things. Banjo sounds like a celebrity baby name to me (in fact the actress Rachel Griffiths has a son named Banjo). It's not my style, and I wouldn't use it personally... but that's what makes it cool. It's personal to you and your husband bc he plays the Banjo. I say go for it!

I dont think Banjo is the worst name ever but I think its overkill with Gideon which is already an out their name

what are your other children's names?

also could you not maybe use you OH favorite banjo player or composer as an option

I think paired with Gideon it is a bit much, but both names by themselves aren't bad. Banjo could definitely work as a middle name IMO I think it's a cute connection

Bit too goofy imo. Have you thought of using a famous banjo players name instead?

Not for me personally. However if like us you don't really use the middle name then it's fine. You should go with whatever you like x

It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. It's your baby and your decision (meaning you and your OH).

If it did feel a little too out there for your taste, however, how about a similar name instead? Benji maybe?

I was prepared to post that I didn't really care for it when I read your post title...but by the time I got to the end of the comments, I realized I don't mind it at all! I actually think it goes well with Gideon, which is an awesome name IMO! And the fact that it connects with your OH's love of music gives it meaning. I wouldn't use it for a first name, but for a MN, I think you should go for it if it feels right to you. And finding a name that both mom and OH like isn't always an easy task - you'll always have other people who raise an eyebrow at the name you choose, so I say disregard their opinions! DH and I are strongly leaning towards naming our baby boy "Wylie" (it has familial ties) and we've gotten a lot of weird looks about it, but we both still love it! Go with your gut :)

Thank you for the input, ladies. I really do appreciate it- negative or positive. to be honest, I think it is a kind of cute name, but wondered if others thought it silly/goofy. I think that if my husband really feels passionatly about it, I will give it the okay. Gideon is climbing the ladder in popularity in the US- it's in the top 500, so it's just the Banjo part that is unusual, I think.

You're in the US. Here in the US, middle names (and even first names for that matter) are becoming more than just unique or different. I think it was started by Hollywood actually... (Coco, Apple, Kingston, Blue, etc.).
So, for being in the States, I think at this point anything goes. And therefore, it will be accepted. I don't think the boy would have to worry about being mocked or ridiculed once he gets older. That's what matters most.

Also, I have to agree with Panda. The name has meaning to you! So, it doesn't need other's approval. :)

If the name has meaning to you and your husband, I say go for it! The more I read this thread, the more I like it. Other people's opinions shouldn't matter.
