I recieved a letter form the council about my housing benefit saying the government are changing the baby element. I didn't understand wether they were changing the tax credits or the housing benefit :(
I literally live on my tax credits can anyone help?
TIA
:flower:

As far as i am aware they have done away with the baby element. I'm the same i rely on them as well x

AHHHH!! :hissy: Why do they take money from the people who need it!! :(
I work the hours i can and OH works 39 hours at minimum wage and then we get less and less help :(

They will be changing but it'll only be changing for those with a "higher" household income, I *think* the cut off is £24k per annum per household. At least I hope so, if they take any money off me I'm bloody screwed. I don't have any other income to fall back on at the minute

I HOPE SO! I just looked on the HMRC website and it said there was no baby element from April 2011

They are taking away the baby element from 6th April 2011. This will affect you if you have a baby under 1yr - you will loose £545 (or whatever is left of it)
This in turn, may increase your entitlement to housing benefit as your household income will be less.

The best thing to do is as soon as you recieve your new award for child tax credits, take it to your council and they will reasses your housing benefit claim xxxx

the baby element is going and you may notice a slight drop in the rest or a slight increase. its only really the ones that earn a lot that are gonna be worse effected

its not just those that earn alot who will be affected, those on average incomes will too... OH earns a a fair amount as a teacher and i earn very little as a part time teaching assistant and as far as i can tell we will be entitled to nothing under the new rules even though we will be losing my wage and will have an extra mouth to feed and clothe!

we don't earn a huge amount and we will be losing around 10quid a week so half of what we get now, doesnt sound alot but it is when we were already running things as tight as we could.

I like how they see £24k a year per household a 'higher income'

ridiculous

We've gone from 30 per week to the minimum 10.43 per week.

Our incomes are £19500 and £5200 that is not alot after you take my OH's tax off!

Our incomes are something like 11,500 before tax and mine is about 4k :( I would say thats pretty low.

Apparently its changing. My friend has lost a huge amount of her tax creidits and working tacx credits. her circumstances havnt changed and her Lo is already over one so they not lost baby element. i guess we will find out over next few weeks

www.entitledto.com has been updated, if you select 2011/2012 as calculation year then it will tell you exactly what you'll get this year with all the new changes.

Am I being really think or what?? Whats baby element?? is it your child tax credits?? or the family allowance that everyone gets???

in childrens tax credits there was something called 'baby element' which meant if you had a child under 1 you got more money, not sure of the amount but im sure one of the ladies will know. well they are scapping it so all of us that have babies under 1 will be getting less tax credits

If you have a baby under one,you get 545 pound a year more.
This is called the 'baby element'
We loose this now. So on average we will loose 45 pound a month (adding up to 545 at the end of the year)
