Hiya,
Just wanted to add that ov cramps can happen before, during or after ov. if you know exactly when you ov (cbfm or opk's) you can probably tell somewhat when you're gonna ov. However, even with tests there is no way of knowing when the egg is released, short of having a camera up your hoohaa (lol) and it simply tells you are about to ov. It could be in the next 3 hours or 15.
As a general rule, getting bd in before you ov will yield you the highest chance of success as the sperm needs to swim a god awful long way to get to your fallopian tube. So having them already waiting, willing and able is the way to do it. According to a study done in the US couples who successfully conceived did so, with equal percentages of about 36%, on 2 days before ov and on ov day itself.
Having conceived twice on this premise i think its proof it works! In fact, the first pg was conceived on bd the last time 2 days before ov!!!
Hope this rambling helps, lol!
