That you shouldn't give calpol BEFORE jabs?? My HV recommended doing this before Olivia's jabs and it worked wonders last time but now I've been told you shouldn't??

Has anyone heard this and what's the reasons behind it?

Some surgeries wo't give the jab if they know LO has had calpol before the jab. I beleive the reason for this is because it can mask any problem that may be caused from the jab, rather than seeing if there is a problem then only using it if it is required.

We never gave it before. Just didn't see it necessary. If he reacted badly after the jabs fever wise etc we gave him a dose then.

To be honest, albert was fine after both sets of jabs and didn't need any calpol at all. Maybe it's because they don't always need it?

There was a study that showed that paracetamol before the jab lowers the effectiveness of the immunisation. That could be why. I'm not sure how reliable the test was, but I'd rather oly give medicine when I know she needs it.

Same here.

Everyone kept telling me you must give it to her BEFORE her jabs because it will make her feel better, but i dont find it necessary, she's normally fine after her jabs except on her 1st lot where she was major grumpy so i gave her some after.

I'm not sure of reasons why its a bad thing to give it before jabs, but if Olivia tends to react badly to jabs then you will know whats best for her

my doctor advised not to give Calpol before jabs as it can counter-act some of the 'good' coming in from the jab.... (that's how I innterputed (sp?) it). I was told to give it after if necessary..

We where told not to give it before because it could be hiding a temperature that if the nurse had known was there might never have given them.
Alot of surgeries will refuse the jabs that day if they know you have given calpol beforehand because they need to see LO in their current health to judge if its safe to give them.

I wouldnt take any medication myself unless I was in pain so I certainly wouldnt give it to Anna without a reason.

Plus jab effects (grumpyness and all the normal stuff) dont normaly kick in till about 5 hours after the jabs and then somtimes carry on to the next day so any calpol beforhand will be pointless as it would have worn off by the time it would have been needed if needed at all.

She reacted really badly to the first set. I didn't give her any calpol for those as obviously she was only 8 weeks and when I mentioned it to the HV she said to give her calpol on her 12 week ones an hour or so before she has them and she would be ok. So I did and she was fine. Had a little grumble as the needles went in but after that she was her usual self

You have certainly NOT harmed little Olivia!! Do not even think that!! Its not like she drank the whole bottle of calpol. You done what was best at the time and thats exactly as you should have done! x
