I've been looking at the menu for the restaurant we're all having Christmas dinner at on Christmas Day. One of the starters is onion soup with.... cheese on toast! I've never heard of eating cheese on toast with soup before, I thought you usually just have bread!

Has anyone ever heard of this? I didn't know if it was just me who thought it was a totally weird mix! :haha:

that sounds really odd to me but i rarely eat out and when i do the poshest is pizza hut

but i wouldnt eat that..

Is it cheese on toast or cheesy croutons? It's quite common to have onion soup served with cheesy croutons (which basically is cheese on toast)

It just says French onion soup with cheese on toast. I had visions of a bowl of soup with a slice of cheese on toast at the side :haha:

Yeah we had soup with welsh rarebit at a pretty fancy restaurant once, it sounded strange but was delicious!

I was gonna say, maybe Welsh rarebit

I never had an onion soup without the cheese toast on it, I thought this is how it's served?

Sounds yum, I love cheese on toast haha, maybe a little weird though ;) I wouldn't want a started at Xmas as I make massive dinners haha x

traditionally onion soup Is served with a cheesy crouton which is just a posh way of putting cheese on toast i guess.

xx

I've obviously not eaten at enough fancy restaurants!

it actually sounds really  to me. I would NOT enjoy this...this is why I hate fancy dining. Good old fashion burger for me anyday!

Why I never order it because I haaaaaate cheese!

I eat tomato soup with cheese on toast to dip in it lol I thought it was a bit common!

I've never known French onion soup to be served with out the cheesey crouton, mmmmmmm quite fancy a bowl of that now :)

It's French onion soup, always served with toasted bread (like a large crouton !) and usually gruyere cheese and then gratinated.
I make a very nice one, quite time consuming though!

It defiantly should not be a slice of warburtons and Red Leicester floating on it!!

You just dip it in the soup or leave it in to soak up the soup and go soggy, the taste just goes so well tegether
