Is this a strange starter?

Wow I had no idea this wasn't very common in the UK, it's practically a religion to eat it here  But that's a ghetto description, it's usually described as "gratinée"

Hahaha, ghetto description. Probably cos most people here would have no idea what a gratinee is. I cant say I have ever seen onion soup served any where tbh, the thought of onion soup makes me feel sick.

I guess it never crossed the channel

I've decided against it anyway  I'm having the prawns and salmon cocktail, just hope I've got room for the Christmas dinner and dessert, too! :haha:

I realy strongly recomend everyone at least tries it, it is so yummy but can be a little on the salty (normaly the tinned stuff) side sometimes, but if home made mmmmmmmmm

French onion soup is soooo good. It's one of my favorite soups ever!

Never tried it before, I'll have to try it sometime :)

It was my hospital food after I had DD and it was rancid- put me off for life.

I've never seen it described that way on a UK menu!

It isn't necessarily super common in the UK, but I wouldn't say it's rare to find it in restaurants. Like the others said, I have never had French onion soup without the crouton and cheese on top. Yum yum yum.

It's cheese on toast on the soup :)

I never had an onion soup without the cheese toast on it, I thought this is how it's served?

me too! x

Doesn't sound that odd to me. Just like garlic bread with cheese but without the garlic

That is very traditional - and not strange!

French Onion soup, usually served with a Gruyere Crouton floating in the centre.

Lovely - I love it when my mum makes it.

I really did think it would be a slice of normal toast with melted cheese on!

I think it will be a thick cheese crouton. That is the usual way to serve French Onion Soup. Well I hope it isn't a thick slice of white bread floating on top!!!

Craving french onion soup now. Might have to make some in my slow cooker this weekend

Whenever I make it at home, I use French baguette, and put it in the oven so it gets crispy. This prevents it from getting as soggy as a plain piece of bread. I've never used a crouton before, but I bet it would be just as tasty!

I'm actually very curious to try it now! :)

When I make french onion soup I put some crusty bread in, then grate cheese over it all and grill - it's lovely!
