is this true? :S (crawling vs non crawling)

my oh is dyslexic and he crawled from around 6 months, I think its total nonsense! my lo is getting there with sitting up on his own and I'm sure he'll crawl in his own time, people seem to think development should happen at the same time for everyone, ignore them :flower:

My experience from working in a nursery and looking after SEN children is that skipping crawling is SOMETIMES a sign of a developmental issue, 2 of the children i know bum shuffled etc instead, have both been assessed as being mildly autistic though they both have different issues. But i know other children who didn't crawl and are no different than ones who did, so sometimes it can be part of a bigger problem but there would be other things going on as well. Crawling is meant to make lots of new connections in the brain and skipping it means they skip that phase of learning but tbh..if it was my child i wouldn't be worried they all find their own ways of doing things and as you said he doesn't like being on his tummy so thats that he'l do what he wants x x

I never crawled and I am a qualified dyslexia screener and tutor!

Nolan is a bum shuffler and has been early with most milestones. I would think if there is a relation between the two it would be a child with dyslexia may not crawl.. not because they don't crawl they will become dyslexic. Only time will tell and it is not something to worry about now.

Sorry I didn't read all the replies. I didn't crawl I rolled and I'm not dyslexic. My brother didn't crawl (he had hip probs) and is dyslexic. Both of my sisters crawled and only one of them has dyslexia.

Sounds like a load of old tosh to me.

I think he's thinking of dyspraxia but still I wouldn't worry. It still isn't a "scientific fact".

Certain developmental disorders one of the signs is not crawling and bottom shuffling; but its one sign out of many and not a sign your child has such a disorder; but when they are diagnosing these disorders in childhood its one of the things they look for if your child is showing other symptoms. They don't take not crawling alone as a sign of anything whatsoever. One of my cousins has a rare disorder called FG syndrome and weirdly, bottom shuffling/not crawling is one of the signs in girls where this disorder runs in their family; that they are a carrier.

Not heard that, but read in a book that if a baby doesn't master crawling and goes straight to walking, then they can have coordination problems primarily and throughout their toddling stage which means they are lightly to fall down or bang into things more :)

That was "research" that came out of the 70s and has long since been totally debunked. I never crawled (walked at 9 months) and am not dyslexic. I have no learning or other disabilities. I was considered "gifted" academically as a child.

My sister crawled and is dyslexic.

My DS did not crawl, but walked at 9.5 months. I have no fear he will be dyslexic. And if he is, it is not because of not crawling. It's more likely to be because dyslexia is present in both families. I'm not sure if DD will crawl -- looks 50/50 at this point. I'm not worried about it either way.

I never crawled, just went straight to walking at 9 months. My brother and sister were exactly the same. None of us are autistic and my brother just finished a PhD in nuclear physics......
