During my first two pregnancies I was diagnosed with Intrauterine Growth Restriction. While I try to still understand this term and what it actually is and if I had it twice will I get it again I can't seem to find any really helpful information. Does anyone else know anything about this? I also wander if that is what could have caused the complications that I had.

They think I may have this. I have to see a placenta specialist on Xmas eve as my baby is measuring below the 5th centile and her stomach is small. If it is that would you mind explaining to me what it actually is and does it mean my baby will be early? Thank you xx

I wish i could explain it I keep trying to understand it myself because I have a hard time finding info or getting info off my doctors even. I know that I had complications during my last pregnancy but I don't think that they were related to the IUGR.

early delivery depends on what is causing the growth restriction from what iv been reading hun.

i was in IUGR baby and i was born at 36 weeks at 3lb 15oz. My DD1 was a small baby and was born 5lb 14 at 40+6 although i was not diagnosed with any form of iugr or growth restrictions x

It seems like IUGR is more of a description of a symptom (baby not growing as quickly/as large as expected), and the underlying cause is sometimes hard for them to determine.

Do you know if it was every documented/determined what caused your first two to be IUGR?

High blood pressure can cause it. It can also be the sign of an ineffective placenta.

I think it's important to bear in mind your baby's growth throughout the pregnancy. If they follow the same path/percentile then surely they are just a small baby? If they drop from one percentile to a much lower one, I would say that's iugr.

my son was an IUGR baby, it's a number of things that can cause it.
In my case it was because I am small (5ft) and my lack of weight gain. I gained 15lbs with him.

I did find a site that lists all the things that can cause it, but I don't like as it made me feel like it was my fault that my son was small.

I can post you the link if you like, but I don't really want you too feel like I did when I read it.

I would still like to see the site and see what i can learn and see if there is anything I can do to prevent this I don't know if I can get the documentation or not because with my last two kids it was in another county. So I don't know and no idea how they listed it.

this is the site I got my info from.
it the maternal causes that made me feel like it was my fault, even though the only thing I come under with it was the poor weight gain. despite the fact I ate pretty much every 2 hours through out most of my pregnancy with my little one.
And the way things are going with this one I might be having another IUGR baby, ( gut feeling) I've only gained 9-10lbs.

It's a real chicken or egg scenario, eg IUGR can cause high blood pressure, but high blood pressure can also be caused by IUGR!

I recommend you get your placenta analysed after birth to see if there is/was any underlying cause.

Hi proud parent. I've just read your post on high cholesterol and now on IUGR with interest. In wondering if there is a link with high cholesterol and IUGR as my daughter was born at 5lb1oz at 39 weeks. I may see if there has been any research on this.
