Say for example, our IVF worked on the first try, would we still get our remaining two goes to try for another child later on? Or if we froze embryos from our fresh cycle, would we still be entitled to use those? I've been told that we dont :( Just wanted to confirm to see if anyone else knows different?

Good question.. Sorry i dont know the answer but would like to know it.. xx

Once you have a child your not entitled to ivf on the nhs. Not sure what the policy would be for frozen embryos though it's worth asking.

you would be entitled to use your embryos (thank god!), but you might have to pick up the costs for freezing them and then most certainly pay for the costs of FET.

I think from what I have read you dont get anymore goes on the NHS if youve got a child. But I would check on your PCT.

I'm Wiltshire PCT and we're entitled to 3 free goes (fresh cycles, so the FETs don't count). I've asked my clinic this and if we have frozen embies, then we would have to pay for the storage of them and the FET, should our cycles result in a child.

Hey A,

Friends of ours had IVF and were successful first cycle with twins. They were able to freeze the remaining embies for a small fee.

When they went for a second cycle they used their embies but had to pay for the FET cycle as they were not entitled to anymore NHS goes since they now had kiddies - but the cost of FET was minimal in comparison to the cost of another full ICSI cycle.... which is just as well as they got a second set of twins!

I never even thought of this. I had just assumed I would be able to use my three free goes regardless. I guess ill have to start saving for baby number 2! I wish they would put two embies back now. At least if I had twins it wouldn't matter if we couldn't afford another cycle!

rachelle that is incredible that they had twins twice! What a blessing!

Hayz I hadnt really considered this either until one of my friends mentioned it. I am pretty disappointed about this as I assumed we'd get to use all our goes regardless. I want more than one child. I'm glad I know this now though as I will absolutely and definitely have 2 emryos put back, as I will try for twins...we might not get another chance. I will check with our clinic, but it seems this is the way it is

I have secondary infertilty so don't get any goes on the nhs they wouldn't even pay for my drugs it really sucks !

If either of you has a child, even from a previous relationship, (however he or she was conceived) you are not entitled to NHS treatment.

We have to pay for frozen storage after a year and then we would just pay for FET, medicated or natural, when we wanted to use our embies. If you don't have frosties you would have to pay for a whole IVF cycle.

xx

I know that if u already have a child u arent entitled, but I just wondered if it was different for us as we are having IVF treatment to have our FIRST child. So, once we have a child, all entitlements cease?

Oneday how awful, I thought everybody was entitled to at least one go! :hugs:

Aphrodite, no, no different. At least not in our PCT. I checked with my FS. I understand it though, otherwise it would be unfair for those with secondary infertility (as in, they have one child too but not allowed NHS funding).

Unfortunately, however your first child was conceived, naturally or with IVF, you are not entitled to NHS treatment for a subsequent pregnancy.

xx

My PCT allow me 3 tries even though my partner has three kids. She had to phone the hospital to check first though as the rules keep changing but I am on the waiting list :happydance:

Not sure if this is really right in saying this on this thread but I've been thinking alot about the costs of IVF treatment and I find it so hard that childless couples have to pay to have 1 baby. Why is it that all other treatments through the NHS are free? Someone can throw as much drink down their throats and end up having free NHS treatment to repair the damage they've done. I just don't think it's fair at all :growlmad:

Anyway rant over, but I never realised you could lose embryos that were frozen if you had a successful cycle. Even more to think about if I end up down that route too.

Good luck everyone with their up-coming cycles.

Wow, I didn't know there was free ivf? :( I guess not in Australia. We were lucky to be successful with first ICSI, we still have two embryo's frozen...We have had to pay all the costs, but I do know the the FET Is far far far cheaper than a fresh cycle...We could not afford a second go at ICSI so I'm grateful that the costs aren't going to be as bad..

With that said, our stupid government has just put the costs of IVF up *curses loudly* so soon even a FET will be out of reach for most families...it's disgusting!!!!!
