I also posted this in 3rd tri, but I wanted to post here too...

I took the 1 hour glucose test on the 7th and found out today at my 30 wk appointment that I was VERY high on my glucose count. They wanted me to be between 130-140 but I was 237.

So my OB reffered me to a specialist at another hospital for further tests and treatments and I fortunately got an appointment for wednesday so I don't have to wait too long, but until then I have no idea what to do...I know that at the basic level I have to change my diet but I don't know how or what I'm supposed to change!!! I basically live on pasta and fruit...but people tell me I'm not supposed to eat sugars and carbs...but then people say I have to watch my fat intake...so am I just supposed to live on plain chicken breasts and veggies?

Also how does this affect baby? My OB said it could lead to a large baby...which I'm actually built to deliver (I've had lovely child bearing hips since puberty) but I'm worried this ups my chances of having to have a c-section which I want to avoid as much as possible... Also does this up the chances of me developing other complications like pre-term labor, pre-eeclampsia, etc... what does this mean for the health of my baby AFTER he's born? and is it true that the diabetes goes away after labor?

I've got so many questions and no answers and I'm freaking out...do any of you lovely ladies have experience with this and could help me through this? Any info would be greatly appriciated!!!

edit: also it wasn't my doctor's fault that I didn't get the results until now it was my stupid cell phone company, my voice mail system has been screwed up for weeks now...

Hi hun, I had my glucose tolerance test at 23 weeks and was diagnosed at 24 weeks.
It's hard to say what will happen as everyones different.
I was told to come into hospital two days after they called me.
There it was explained that for a week I was to cut out sugary foods only, and that if food was savoury, then I could eat it for now. They gave me a kit which they taught me how to use. I test my blood with this 4 times a day. Once in the morning, one hour after breakfast, one hour after lunch, one hour after evening meal.
Yes there are risks of having it but as long as you try your best to get it under control it will minimilise these risks. It doesn't mean that anything will happen to your baby after he's born. Gestational diabetes usually disappears after the birth in most cases, they've told me however that as I have polycystic ovary syndrome which is insulin related and goes hand in hand with diabetes, I could have been pre diabetic before pregnancy so I might develop that after pregnancy too.
As for baby, yes it could mean a big baby, and if they think baby is too large they will suggest a c-section as they don't want to "damage" down there if necessary. Everyone will tell you different in regards to diet because every individual is different. I've stuck to carbs, protein etc, and just cut out sugar and my levels are well in the safe range. However, until you get seen and talked to try not to panic and just cut out sugar for now. They will give you advice when they see you. I'm due to go back in 2 days when I will also meet a dietician too.
They apparently monitor us closely aswell, more scans etc on the baby. And sometimes the baby will have a little bit of trouble breathing when he/she arrives but it just means they take the baby straight to be checked. I know it seems daunting but try not to worry. And cut out the fruit would be a bit more advice. I've only known i've had this for a week but the ladies on here have been so imformative.
xx
