Sickness during pregnancy can't be disciplined - but sickness pay during pregnancy follows the same protocol as normal sick pay.

Where I work there is only ever Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) - since being on here, I've been surprised just how many women work in places which operate the same way.

I was lucky because despite everything I got 4 weeks at full pay then onto SSP (£72 a week).

Like Seraphim says, they can't discipline but sick pay is at their discretion. I would speak to your Union as that's what they're there for.

thanks guys.
Just sent an email to them.
Fingers crossed.

Do you have your contract to hand? that should state how sick pay works

I work for the NHS as well and you can't be discriminated against for being sick and pregnant eg . sacked whilst on sick but if you've been on sick for a while, your pay will drop. If you are off sick forlong enough, eventually you will go on to early mat leave and then get your full pay for so many weeks, half pay etc.......
as everyone has said, you need to check your contract or speak to HR.
I guess it all depends on how long you've been off sick.

I had a couple of days off sick because of a bleed at 19 weeks & my boss told me that she had searched through everything to see about pay but if your workplace dont normally pay you when your off sick then the same rules apply even if its pregnancy related so i didnt get paid x I Imagine the same applies for SSP x but like the other girls have said read your contract it should tell you in there x

Depends what the policy is hun. My company policy is something like 6 weeks full pay, and up to 6 months half pay or SSP whichever is more x

Sorry to add more worry, but also you need to check how maternity pay will be calculated as I had to time going back to work to the right week as the pay was an average over 2 months pay which happened to be from a certain number of weeks (but I can´t remember what ones) but I would defo get them to check it out as well. Hope you get it all sorted. You could always ask the HR dept to send you a copy of the policy or else search online as I am pretty sure that most NHS´ have the same policies.

Hi :wave::wave:

I work in HR for an NHS trust and the sick pay scheme with us is a maximum of 6 months full pay followed by 6 months half pay in a 12 month period (this is the max you can get and you need to have been working in the NHS for at least 5 years to accrue that), between years 1-5 of employment it goes up in stages up to that maximum.

It would really depend on what the sick policy is for your NHS trust but I think most of them are the same.

You can't be discriminated against due to your pregnancy but they can apply the normal sick pay rules.

I'd definitely advise speaking with your HR department as they will be able to clarify it for you.

Good luck, hope you get it all sorted.
