I'm thinking of getting my son a tablet for his 6th birthday. I see lots of good reviews for kids kindle fire but I don't have prime and don't see this changing in the near future so I don't know if this is worth it as lots of the content that people seem to like I wouldn't automatically get. I am tempted by it's being 'unbreakable' though. I've seen a Lenovo advertised which is half the price and still had kid safe browsing settings and things and I'm wondering if this or something similar would be a better option?

He doesn't really use a tablet much at the minute when he does it's for maths apps or simple games or watching BBC programmes I've downloaded on iPlayer...

What have other people got and would you recommend it?

Thanks

We’ve got a kids fire tablet but we don’t have prime either and my son has access to loads of content. He will happily play on that rather than the iPad if he gets the choice

We have the kindle Fire for our boys, you do not need a Prime subscription for them. I think they are two totally separate things. My boys absolutely love their tablets and there are loads of really cool games on them. I would definitely recommend them.

Thank you. I knew that you could still get the content without prime I was just concerned about what happened at the end of the free year of content as it is more expensive without prime and I didn't know if the tablet still worked just without new content if I didn't keep up the subscription or if it stopped working. As presumably it doesn't have play store I don't know if I could get other apps or not. Actually that's a good point the school have just been doing a maths competition that we had to access via browser or an app that was in playstore or iTunes, do they have a different app store that would work for this? Think I might just need to go and play with one!

I don't think it is tied to prime at all. All the stuff my boys are downloading is free and they have had their kindles for over a year. We do have prime but I have never had to buy anything from any app store.

Oh ok. It just says in the blurb you get 12months of kids fire content for free after that there's a monthly subscription which anyone can get but is a lot cheaper if you have prime. That's the only reason I was worried...

My Ds has had access to my tablet since he was 2 and decided to spend his birthday and Christmas money on a better one when he was five - I know the ones aimed at children advertise there durability but if you can get one that will do what you want for half the price then why not go for that and take out an accidental damage cover, or see if it's covered on your house insurance - unless you need it to do something specific then why spend more money?

My 6yr old has our old iPad, and loves it. It is around 8 yrs old now and no matter what he does to it, it doesn't break. You can download lots of stuff from the App store for free. The price might be a bit prohibitive, however.

My 5 year old has the kindle fire, we don't have prime and there's lots of free content!
