OMG - found out I'm having twins at this mornings scan!!! I swear I nearly fell off the table in shock!!!

Looks like they are non identical as they have seperate sacs and placentas- does that mean i produced 2 eggs that were both fertilised by different sperm? I didnt ask any of the right questions because I couldnt quite take in the news! Both bubs looking good :-)

This is my first ever pregnancy- I have been feeling rough as a dog with puking and exhaustion and I really thought 'jeez this is hard' but now i understand why!
I just thought I was really bad at being pregnant!

awww congrats to you,we only found out at our 12 week scan too so i know that feeling lol
Belive me the shock does eventully were off.....:baby::baby:

Congrats!! Welcome to "the club" :)

If they are non-identical then yes, you produced two eggs, which were fertilised by two seperate sperm. I know how you feel, I left my scan in such a daze that I never asked any questions either! Enjoy your pregnancy, you are in for one heck of a ride! xx

Congrats!! They COULD be identical still if the egg split early enough. There is roughly a 20% chance of them being identical. Mine are the same, and since they are two girls, I have to wait until they are born to see if they look alike or not. If they do, then I will get them DNA tested to find out for sure. You will have to see first if they are the same sex (if one boy and one girl, then they are for sure Fraternal), but if they are the same sex, you will have to wait until after they are born to get DNA done. Good luck!!

OMG ladies- its half three in the morning and I seriously cant sleep! All the usual worries I guess- i.e how the hell are we gonna cope? More on a practical/financial level i guess- emotionally I think all will be good- before the scan I was kinda feeling a bit down with all the sickness and exhaustion I feel like there was some sort of magic switch turned on when the doc told us the news and my heart leapt out my chest! Have suddenly thought of a million questions! Gonna call my community midwife and bleed her dry for information I think...but in general...where the hell do I start?? ha ha :-)

thank you for all of your replies ladies x x x

Huge congratulations hun. A multiple pregnancy is some journey!!!
My 2 girls are fraternals and as Ladypotter said there is still a chance they could be identical. When our girls arrived is is very clear that they aren't identical. They are so different in evey way!!
Feel free to ask as many questions as you like on here, between us we have enough twins to answer!!

Take care xxxxxx

I have two boys, and they said they were not identical from the membrane, the thickness of it between them..sure enough...they are totally different! Welcome aboard! Questions you could be asking..How do you prevent waters breaking? Vitamin C and zinc make strong bags..Pre-eclamsia? High protein for that, and it also helps to ward off gestational diabetes. I was a freak when I first found out because I am all about knowledge is power! So I researched the heck out of everything! Good luck and welcome!

Congratulations!!! The next 9 months will me one heck of a journey so make sure you rest up & take it easy!! x

Double congratulations and welcome! :baby::baby:

thank you all for the replies ladies! Its good to know I have a wealth of knowledge and experience behind me!!

Mama2more-thanks for the diet tips-esp on the protein- I have been a veggie for about 18 months and my iron levels were ok at 9 weeks apparently (12.4) but am gonna get munching on some meat as soon as this MS dies down! Bring on the burgers! :-) Cant believe I'm saying that!!

i left a message for my community midwife today asking her to phone me so I can tell her the news- question number one- i know there is already a thread on this but...according to scan i am due 26th November but realistically?!? I mean if everything is relatively straight forward when are we talking do you think? Is working to about 30 weeks realistic? Its full time and I need to be able to fit behind the wheel of a car. My colleagues are all supportive etc etc.

space in the flat is an issue- its great for me and OH- manageable with a singleton to a point...but two?!? Do i need 2 cots for example? Those things are massive! and double buggies eeeek! How the hell does that fit in a vauxhall corsa?!?

any thoughts would be more than welcome!!!

heheheh 1,2,3 and breathe..................

I would try and leave work when you can at 29 weeks, it was about that time I couldnt drive anymore not due to bump size more because Sams head was rammed under my ribs and I couldnt turn my body to look out the right window.

Cots - we put them in two cots quite early on and they are still in two cots now in our room. Others have theirs in the same one way passed four months - it just depends on how they do together.

Buggies - I have a cosatto and have to say its fabulous fits through any doorway

oh and I didnt find my midwife etc very knowledegable on twins tbh - the ladies on here were far more help.

Oh and welcome - it is absolutley fabulous having twins!!!!

thanks Vicky- I can feel panic mode setting in! 1 2 3...aaahhhh much better already :-)

Lol, you sound like me when I first found out!! Buzzing with questions and panicking! I dont think your midwife willbe much help as Vicky says - they tend to keep away from twin mums! lol. You should be under the care of a consultant and depending on whether they are fraternal or identical - you'll be scanned accordingly (every 2 weeks for identical, every 4 weeks i think for fraternal).

My due date is 28th July but have been told that I will be induced at 37 weeks (soooo 6 weeks to go - yaaaay :happydance:). It depends on the hospital and the consultant and of course, how the pregnancy goes really. I know mums on here that went to full term (yikes) and some who went into early labour at 28 weeks - so you'll just have to see how it goes.

As for working upto 30 weeks - I could only manage upto 20 weeks. A twin pregnancy is such a toll on the body and so different to a singleton pregnancy that you really do have to take it easy and listen to your body. I got signed off work at 20 weeks and although im bored stiff, Im sooo glad I stopped as I think if i tried to push myself, I would have gone into early labour! (course i dont knwo this for sure, but its just a feeling i had and BP was high due to stress and physical side of working).

Buggies, I got the same as vicky (cossatto you 2) - havent used it yet obviously but ive been told its a good one and very reasonably priced. Space, flat wise - Im in the same boat as you are. I live in a small 2 bedroomed flat and I already have a 4 year old, so fitting the twins and all their equipment in, will definately be fun and games. Im going to put them inour room in a cotbed for the first 6 months and we are hoping to move after that (back to my parents until we can save up a bit) so hopefully all will go to plan. All i know is that nothing will be the same once the twins are here, but the excitement and joy they have already given me, it willbe well worth it. Good luck hun, we're all here whenever u need us. xx

Awww hun, there are so many questions that will be flying round your head! And if you look back through the threads you will see the same first posts from each of us!!!

AS the others said cmw's tend to b wary of multiple mums and only want to do routine obs etc. Saying that my Mw was fantastic (was the same cmw i had with my daughter), the support she gave was fantastic,s o fingers crossed you will have a good one!

The i-candy peach twin will fit into the boot of a vauxhall corsa, it collapses very small!

As for working i only managed to 20 weeks, i was then signed of by my gp for the remaining weeks. I was reaaly worried about having to approach my gp, but after a fall i decided that i needed to look after me and my babies so went along to see her and she was more than happy to sign me off. I tmeant that i didn't have to waste my maternity leave before the babies were here.
My girls are 3 weeks old tomorrow, I had them at 38+3, my hospital policy is to induce at 39 weeks, so had things not happened the way they did then my induction was booked for 39+1.
As chetnaz said things depend on if your babies areids or fraternals, although i had gfraternals and was scanned evey 2 weeks.

Take care xxxx

Forgot to say i to am a veggie, i was put onto iron tablets as soon as they found i was having twins, my iron levels went down to 10.1 and for the 2 weeks bofore the birth i was on 3 tablets a day. Get those leafy greens downs you hun. xxxxxx

Congrats on the twins hun. I´m not really in a position to offer much advice on twins, only being in 2nd tri and all, but you´re like me, the MS will eventually go away around weeks 15/16. What doesn´t go away, however, is constantly feeling tired. I´m not even that far along and I don´t know how I´ll get through the rest of the pregnancy.

The idea of two little ones growing inside me is a joy though.

hi ladies

well you were pretty much right about the response from CMW- I didnt bombard her with questions I promise! I just told her the news about it being twins and asked her opinion about when its realistic to start mat. leave and she was generally vague and said ' well you know see how it goes'.

anyhow I presented my boss with the somewhat ambitious provisional plan of leaving at 32 weeks and he laughed and said ' yeah... we'll see' but signed it off anyway.

good to know i'm not the only one dealing with space issues with my Vauxhall corsa and 2 bed flat!!!

Interesting to hear some of you ladies are going to be induced- kind of assumed (?secretly hoped) it would be a straightforward case of elective c section for twinnies- stupid question i'm sure but how can you have two heads engaged in your pelvis? couldnt twin 2 be doing somersaults while he is waiting his turn? Think my personal idea of hell would be to go through all the effort of pushing number one out not to be able to finish the job and end up having emergency c section aswell!!! Maybe thats not how it works tho? have an appointment with consultant at 20 weeks so lots of time to think about how it works and what I want...

Cant believe the impact finding out its twins has made on me! its just like a little bit of magic has been added to the pregnancy! Its lovely telling everyone and hearing their sense of shock and delight for us! Only had one slightly iffy response from a colleague who emailed me to say congrats but ' no offence but I wouldnt want twins'...anyway by the end of the day she was at my door asking for conception tips!!! anyway it didnt dampen my spirits one bit!:happydance:
