Hi all,

I am new to the second trimester forum and am exited to be here!!

I have a worry which has been nagging at me all these past 3 months but today I felt I should allay my fears (or face them!) rather than keep wondering the rest of the 6 months!

The thing is, I tend to keep my laptop on my tummy while using it when lying in bed, and I was wondering whether doing this for prolonged periods of time (or for any time at all) can cause any harm to my lil bean?!

I know that some rays are emitted from the laptop monitor, but i also feel that the underside can get very hot sometimes and wonder whether any other harmful rays etc come out of there as well? As these are directly over my bump I dont want any negative effect being produced.

I know the obvious answer would be to NOT keep it on my tummy, but lately I always get a backache whenever I use the laptop placed in front of me on a coffee table, and unfortunately I dont have the appropriate height work table to place it on!

Does anyone know anything about this? If so, would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks!

I wouldn't have thought it was any more dangerous than, say, standing next to the microwave or keeping your mobile phone in your pocket.

I would say if there was any risk of this at all, there would be a general warning to anyone using a laptop. The heat is generated mainly by the battery rather than anything nasty. It is likely more risky to your laptop than it is to you!

You can get heat resistant mats for laptops which might help.

i would say its perfectly fine!! i do exactly the same thing with my laptop and when it starts to get hot my LO will start kicking me which i think is an indication of saying get it off me lol so i then move positions for while x

i have often thought about this, so i tend to put laptop on the table instead of on my lap x

Only thing it will do is make your stomach hot... I don't lay it on my stomach but it is nearer the bump now and it gets kicked.

I do have this, which is excellent for sitting up and having laptop on your lap, it also stops making your legs get hot.

PC World sell them but they are more expensive!

I use my laptop on my knee and i put a pillow under it. Bubs seem to go mad when im on it tho lol. must not like me resting and chatting

Welcome to 2nd tri! If you're worried try a pillow or sheet or something between the laptop and bump so you don't get hot :)

It shouldn't be harmful, if you are worried i was going to suggest using a towel or pillow under it. When Im downstairs I use the arm rest of the sofa, its high enough and then I don't get hot at all, take care :hugs: XX

yeh i say the same...use a pillow on your belly. when i occasionally put the laptop on my belly i use a pillow to cushion the heat and also the weight of the laptop!! im pretty sure its ok as there arent any particular warnings out there to say not to!! I think the only thing ive heard about laptop is it reduces mens fertility but i dont know if its true or not!!! xxx

I personally wouldn't use a pillow or sheet under your laptop. You could cause the battery to overheat, which could fry your laptop.

You might want to invest in a laptop lap table that you can buy just about everywhere. They are perfect for what you need.

Much like this one. They generally cost between $20-$40 CDN

I've been putting laptop on my bump since day 1 of becoming pregnant and everything is fine so far :)
Baby however doesn't like it so much and tends to push it off which is usually an indication to move it up or down a little.

Hi I looked into this a while ago and what I read said it was not harmful. The laptops are all produced in line with EU regulations (unless you have bought a dodgy one from a foreign website!) and don't emit enough harmful things to harm the baby. Can't member which website I found it on but you can do a google search to find more info on it. PS I do it all the time too

I have fans under my laptop so I dont get a hot lap it also keeps your laptop from overheating and I have my laptop on my legs just under my belly/bump I very rarely put it on my belly/bump but have fans under it which we brought from pc world for about £20 xx

I have one of these too and it is a complete godsend... stops me from cricking my neck to see the screen too!

I am guilty of using my laptop on my abdomen when I would lie down too, and I did this for a number of years, until I learned how harmful it is not only to your baby but also to yourself.

It is extremely dangerous to work with your computer on the lap since its bottom part emits a very very hazardous radiation.

Not only the base part is dangerous, its WIFI Radio Field Radiation that makes us connected to a network is more dangerous than the radiation that the hard disk, CPU, RAM, and processor are emitting. This radiation that we get from our laptop can cause cancer, tumor, and brain dysfunctions. Also, the heat that we get from where we rest our hands while typing is the radiation from the CPU. However, the radiation from the laptop's LCD is lesser than desktop computers.

If you don't believe me, take a look at these sources:

I was totally freaked out when I learned this, but its not too late to stop! I hope... But I am sooooo thankful I found all this out before I got pregnant. Good luck everyone! :hugs:

i would ask your mw. ther eason i say this is that if men use laptops on their laps daily it can reduce their sperm count due to the heat and waves from it. (my friend was told this as she is having trouble concieving and it was 1 of the many "useful" things they were told that reuces.)

when i use my laptop its usually on the arm of the sofa.

Welcome to 2nd tri hun!! I did wonder about this, although I put my laptop on my thighs when lying in bed as my bump isn't big enough to block my view yet lol! Could you try one of those lap tables for meals in bed to put it on? Not sure if that's the same kind of table someone else suggested. It would stop you getting too hot as well. x

i did put laptop on top of bump for ages, when he got to hot he would kick and i would move it,
now that bumps too big iv gradually progressed to having it rest on my legs,
x

I put mine on a cushion on my lap it is much more comfy that way, I read that there is no danger from using them during pregnancy.

As someone else mentioned please don't put laptops on pillows or other soft materials. The heat needs to be able to escape for the laptop to remain cool and using a pillow means the heat just stays directly below the laptop, sort of like keeping it on a hot plate. Also the vents get clogged a lot quicker from dust and fibres from the material. Use a hard surface, like a tray or similar so the air vents remain clear.

Do be careful about the heat from laptops, the following story is not that uncommon

(altho in most stories like this the guy isn't wearing trousers which apparently this guy was but who actually believes that?!)
