Our second daughter is 8 months old and , unlike our first, wakes up in the middle of the night (4amish) for a feed. Her protests wake up the whole house, including our five year old who then wants attention till school time.

The problem is primarily that my wife has been told by her doctor that she should always feed fresh FF... therefore when Alara (8 months) wakes up, she should boil the kettle, make up and then cool down... taking about 20 mins by which time Alara is wide awake, grumpy. My wife is now at full time work and is close to a nervous breakdown. I came on here, read some threads and told her that she could make them up in the evening, stick them in the fridge and then quickly warm up when Alara wakes up (microwave?).... she says that is wrong... that her doctor told her otherwise.

Can anyone help on this.... ideally I need some powerful eveidence to sway her. FWIW, we use Aptamil formula.

Many thanks.

Hi :hi:

She can preapre the bottles earlier on and keep them in the fridge. heat up the kettle in the evening, pour into the bottle, let cool down, once its cold put the formula in, shake it up, then put in the fridge until you need it. You can leave a bottle in the fridge for 24-48 hours (depends on where you are from) as long as you made it up cold and it hasnt already been heated. Night feed time comes and she just needs to heat the bottle (by putting in a cup of boiling/hot water if you can) It will take about 5 minutes and then she can feed bubs. Just remember once the bottle has been heated throw out any left milk, dont reheat it.

i hope this helps! :)

Thanks Miss Muffet. I've seen this alreadt and told her but it hasn't swayed her. Do you know of any links to advice for mothers that backs up this practise. Right now all she is accepting is what is written on the side of the Aptamil packet and what her doctor says.

hmm I'll have a search but this is information from my midwife, plunket nurse and also what is on the packet. it might be different where you are sorry :(

You can make them up and put them in the fridge but make sure its at the back and not in the door pocket.

Its against the guidlines but at 8 months your LO is going to be putting all sorts of things in her mouth anyway so not everything is ever going to be sterile and bacteria free.

Have you tried giving a dream feed at 11pm so that your LO can at least go through the night?

Yes, we do a dream feed but she's up and at em soemtime between 4 and 6 am again... so are yous aying it IS against the guidelines ot make the formula and then keep it in the fridge?

There is nothing wrong with keeping formula in the fridge. Especially not at 8 months old. Saves you alot of time too :)

It is against the way formula is supposed to be made up now but its up to the parent.

We made the formula up and put it in the fridge from about 3/4 months.

If your uncomfortable doing that you could just buy the cartons of formula for the 4am feed and warm it in the microwave.

(we also did the microwave warming from 3/4 months to which another rule breaker)

My problem is that my wife is so nervous about health that she wants to follow everything by the book. Doctor said don't do it so she refuses to do it. I am hoping ı can find something official that says 'yes, you can do it'.

Both kids are angels but my wife is heading for a nervous breakdown.

Just suggest she give the 4am feed from a carton of ready made formula. Then there's no need to spend 20 minutes faffing to boil kettle/cool down etc. My lo will take it at room temperature but if your lo likes it warm just take a flask of boiling water to bed with you and when lo wakes pour carton into bottle, pop bottle into warm water and you'll have a fresh sterilised bottle of warm milk within minutes... ta dah!

eta - agree with most of the above posters as well about making up feeds and you alternating with your wife to give feeds to allow her some rest and recovery!

This is what I do, but may help you.
Before bed I boil the kettle and pour it in boiling hot in a tommee tippee flask.
Then I take bottles/flask/formula to bed (I put them in a room away from baby) and when she wakes for a bottle I Just have to cool down the bottle in cold water, the flask keeps it hot for 6 hours, but usually about the right temp when I use it anyway.

The flasks are also good for trips out and during the day, keeps the kettle free for brews:rofl: hope this helps

Great idea everyone. Thanks. The tomee tippee idea is interesting... I didnt know about the flasks..... still not sure if it will convince...
You don't know my wife... daddies CANT do feeding OR nappies lol!!!

Used to be ababy-sitter too

This is EXACTLY what I wanted..... thank you very much... pity, like all good UK gov docs its so long-winded but it gets the point across. I'll print and give me wife and then fingers crossed.

Is houldsay we are now living in Turkey and my wife is Turkish so I may have to get this translated for the doctor.

Thank you very much

Go to the Enfamil website , at least maybe she will believe you if she see's it from the manufacturer of formula. I prepare bottles for every 24 hours, we use to boil the water then make it when baby needed it but we almost drove ourselves crazy!

Storing prepared formula
Prepared bottles of formula (from ready-to-feed liquid, concentrated liquid or powder) should be refrigerated and used according to the table below.

Instructions
Refrigerated bottles

(2-4° C, 35-40° F) Formula made from powder
Good for 24 hours.
Ready-to-feed liquid formula or formula made from concentrate
Good for 48 hours.

Bottles at room temperature All forms of formula
Good for 2 hours. If bottle is warmed, good for 1 hour.
Bottles after feeding begins All forms of formula
Use within 1 hour or discard.
Do not refrigerate leftover formula for later use.

Please note: Proper hygiene, preparation, dilution, use and storage are important when preparing infant formula. Powdered infant formula is not sterile and should not be fed to premature infants or infants who might have immune problems unless directed and supervised by your baby's doctor. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe harm to your baby.

hi.. I make up 7oz bottles by keeping 4 oz of cooled boiled water in the fridge and then when i want the bottle i either boil the kettle or if i am out i use a thermos flask to top the rest up. i then add my powder and there you have it, a fresh made up feed in less than 3 minutes!! hope you get sorted x
