We have brought a new house which is needs a complete refurb so I'm getting to decorate and plan each room how ever we like which I'm loving!

But I'm really struggling for living room ideas, so if you could decorate a living room how ever you liked how would you have it ?

Try Pinterest for ideas there are loads and you can put search terms in e.g. Modern, cosy etc...

It really depends on what age/ character the house is what colours I would pick. Ours is a seventies house so really has no character of its own. It's mostly a duck egg blue colour. I also like plum and this would be my choice for redecorating.

I live in a cottage so I've always wanted to keep in with the cottage theme as I feel if I went too modern it just wouldn't suit the house with the old wooden beams, kinda new cottage style though, shabby chic etc..

What's the house like? I think it's good to take inspiration from the house style. Even if you do a contemporary twist.

We're about to decorate our 1930s house and struggling with inspiration myself
Trouble is the era was all about art deco which I love but hubby hates!

A gallery wall is something I'd love. Not sure if we'll do it in the living room or elsewhere though! Probably the living room or hall.

my living rom would be all about shabby chic/natural woods, & simple black/white photo frames,
and neutral colours/golds/browns/bronzes etc
here is my living room currently - if i was living here longer i would also paint the walls a taupe colour from magnolia

Thanks everyone for your replies :)

This is a picture of the living room, it's currently a through living room/diner but we are putting up a dividing wall as making a kitchen/diner so you can kind of see where the room will end in the picture! It will obviously have new windows, new fire and fireplace plastered!

I know I want it to be cosy but that's about as far as I can get haha!

LOVE these, planning on doing one on the wall next to the stairs

Love the floor! You're doing a similar remodel to us - we're also dividing the through room and then knocking through to make a kitchen diner.

Lots of fabrics and texture in the room will make it feel cosy - floor length curtains, a textured rug, cushions, footstool.

I always loved how we decorated our lounge in our old house that we've just come from, so much so I'd do same again but hubby wants a change understandably. It had a warm light yellow on 3 walls and chimney breast, a rich red in the alcoves, mahogany floorboards, beige fabrics. The room felt cosy and warm (and stunning with a Christmas tree because of the red theme) but the lighter walls and beiges stopped it being overpowering or outlandish and made the red theme "warm" as opposed to too cold or too modern as red can sometimes be in decor.
