My LO has always been a snack feeder - he only takes in about 50 - 80 mil of my BM at each feed.

I am starting to introduce formula and on the tin it says he should be drinking 250ml, he is only having one formula feed a day at this stage but he is still only drinking the same amount as he would BM and i am concerned that he will continue to snack with the formula and not get in all the nutrients that he should.

This whole ordeal is just stressing me out. I am losing sleep over it and feeling depressed. Is what he is doing normal? will he become ill and lose weight etc once i have him on formula fully and he keeps not drinking enough?

My LO is almost 6 months old and still is a "snacker" and has been FF since she was 2 months old.

She only takes about 3-4 oz at each feed still, dr says it's fine and she'll take what she needs. Is he still BF at all too? Eating solids? he may just be entering a time when he needs less milk. My niece is 8 1/2 months old and she prefers solids now, only taking a couple bottles a day now

Oh great thanks so much for your reply :D Yeah he is still BF and on solids. I am in the process of trying to get him off the boob and FF from here onwards.

I wont stress then, he'll just take what he needs. :)

my pediatrician said formula is richer and heavier so they may not be able to take more at once. I would just mix a small amount so you don't have to waste a lot and then if he wants more, you can always mix it! that's what I started doing and then I didn't worry about how many oz she was taking because I could tell she was full.

My LO is a snack feeder he only takes 90-120ml here and there. I usually have to mix his morning bottle in with fruit and baby rice as he just doesn't like milk and i have to get it into him somehow. It is really stressful. Plus he is on a prescription formula that tastes foul so i struggle to get him to drink it

The thing with the recommended amounts on the side of the tin is that they are based on this mythical "average baby". I can count on one hand the babies I've known who have fit in with these recommended amounts, and even then they didn't follow the chart like a rulebook.

Roo never took the amounts which the box said she should be having according to her age. If we used her weight as the measure, it was closer, but still not right.

Yeah well he has been having plenty of wet and even dirty nappies now, so i am pleased it seems to be all going well!

I'd say it's normal because my daughter's always been a snacker, having small amounts every 1.5-3hrs. At around 7-8 months her daily formula intake slowly lessened, which really got me concerned. Some days around 9-10 months it was a fight to get a mere 200ml in her but she did have the sniffles and was teething quite a while, making it uncomfortable for her. At 11 months she averages 400-550ml a day. Sometimes she'll drink 70ml other times 130ml. We waste a lot of milk since it fluctuates so much. I wouldn't let it get you down as long as your little one seems fit and himself. You could always talk to his pediatrician for suggestions or reassurance. When we called ours one of the staff answered and didn't seem at all surprised or concerned. Some babies gradually start to wean themselves off milk sooner than others. We give yogurt and formula mixed baby oatmeal to boost dairy intake and of course fruit and veggie/meat purees.
