Okay, this is long so bear with me...My LO reverse cycles and doesn't take much from the bottle during the day. My Lactation Consultant assures me it is normal and as long as he is having wet and dirty diapers, he is getting plenty of milk. His dirty diapers have actually had a noticeable increase in the past few days.

I am a little worried though. He only takes around 1.5 ounces per feed, maybe 4 times in the 9 hours I am gone. Then we sit in the chair and nurse/nap/nurse/nap for the rest of the evening we go to bed, where we cosleep. He nurses 2-3 times during the night, but it never seems like a long time (although you know what happens to your perception of time during that half-asleep/half-awake time). He is having plenty of wet/dirty diapers, especially dirty. He also continues this pattern when we are at home on the weekends to some extent, he will not nurse much from morning to early afternoon, then marathon nurses the rest of the day.

My other questions. We went through a series of nipples trying to find one that would not cause a breast aversion, finally settling on the Medela Calma. We tried the BARE, Platex Drop-in with latex nipple, Lansinoh mOmma, AVENT natural. We only liked the mOmma out of those, but after two days of use he wouldn't take the breast for over 24 hours after his last bottle without persuasion and/or the nipple shield. We went to the Calma the next day I was gone and he has done well at the breast since, although he does seem to nurse faster/harder.

The only thing is that my DH says he doesn't seem to like the Calma and has a hard time latching, but when he does latch he will drink from it, but he doesn't seem to like it. Part of me rejoices that he doesn't LIKE the bottle. I am in some ways super glad we found a nipple he will drink from but does not find preferable. On the other hand, I wonder if he WOULD drink more during the day if we used a nipple he might like better. The other side of me says he would nap better (he isn't napping well at all) if he would take more milk. He does need his sleep.

I bought some Dr. Browns glass bottles because I wanted the glass bottles (they will attach to the Calma teat). I also went ahead and picked up some Preemie flow nipples in case we wanted to try them. I know a lot of people like the Dr. Browns. Either way I have glass bottles now! Anyway I am torn as to whether I should try the Dr. Browns or not. On the one hand, we have something that WORKS. He will take it. He doesn't prefer it to the breast. He is getting some milk during the day. On the other hand, he sure isn't drinking much for his size and he isn't napping so well. I wonder if he got more milk in him, he would nap better?

I mean obviously he is getting milk or he wouldn't have some many poopies!

My other question, should I buy some smaller bottles? It takes a lot of space to put 2oz in a 5oz bottle. I pump and store in 4 or 5 oz glass bottles. I hate pouring refrigerated milk into smaller quantities because the fat separates at those temperatures and you don’t get a balanced milk pour and it’s messy. But if I pump into the larger bottles and then at home I have to pour to smaller ones. I hate to buy MORE 5 oz bottles and only fill them a tiny bit. But I am worried if I invest in “preemie” bottles, he will start taking more at a feed soon.

Questions: Should I try the Dr. Brown’s with the preemie nipple and see if he will take it? Should I risk another bottle and nipple confusion? Do you think he should take more during the day, do you think that is what is effecting his sleep? Should I buy smaller glass bottles so I can immediately put the milk after pumping into those and I don’t have to pour it cold, or should I buy more 4-5oz ones and just only fill them a little and use more of them?
