I got told today by my OB that my placenta is low and that I have to get rechecked in 8 weeks by ultrasound. I was reading about it online and am scared now. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hi hun, i have this. It's nothing to worry about really because most placentas WILL move up on their own accord. I think if it hasn't moved up by 36 weeks then you'll have to have a c section, but like i said, the vast majority will move up as the womb grows.

Don't worry!

i had a scan last week n they said the same about me but i havent talked to my dr yet about it.. i also look onlin bout it and it scard me too

Thank you so much! That is reassuring. I unfortunately googled it when I got home and, of course, I read about worst case scenarios. Threw myself into a panic, I did! :p

bababel.... if u dont care keep me updated on what the dr tells ya.. i do the same
i dnt go bck to the dr until the 12th of next month so i hve a few weeks to before knowing what my dr says abut it ...

I wanted you to know youre not alone.

About 2 weeks ago I was told by the ultrasound technician, and the doctor, that I had a "complete placenta previa". This means that the cervix is completely covered by the placenta. For some women this can result in bleeding or spotting. I have been lucky and have not had any. However, to be on the safe side my doctor put me on "pelvic rest" and told me to to do anything too strenuous until we see how things progress. In later pregnancy a complete previa can mean bedrest and/or a mandatory c-section because the placenta is blocking the path for delivery. For many women the placenta will move higher and higher as the uterus grows larger.

I had another ultrasound one week later, to do some more measurements, and I did not expect see much change in only one weeks time. But, was thrilled to see that the "complete placenta previa" is now only a "partial"!! This is good news and hopefully it means that the placenta will continue to migrate to where is is supposed to be. I think for many women, it does move.

Lets stick together and keep eachother updated. It's nice to go through it with someone. Have you been put on pelvic rest?

i have been told the same thing. im on pelvic rest and have another ultrasound in 6 weeks to re check to see if its moved. i had bleeding though. it will be fine, im sure it will probably move. my dr doesnt seem worried about it.

Jeannie, I have my next appointment with my OB on the 18th of October, but I don't get another ultrasound for another while after that. I will update this thread after my next appointment and/or ultrasound and let you know how things are going.

Jokerette, that is excellent news! I'm so glad your placenta is migrating up. Please keep us updated on your progress. I'm wishing the best for you! I have not been given any special instructions from my doctor. She said to just keep doing what I'm doing.

Tucker, what does pelvic rest mean? I will keep my fingers crossed that your placenta migrates too. I've heard that most of the time it does!

Yes, let's stick together. Remember this thread so we can keep updating it!

Pelvic rest means no sex, and no vaginal exams. I think it also means no orgasms but I felt awkward asking that. I'm of course missing it now that I can't have it!!!

oh no , no sex.... i am glad to hear yours is moving on its own... i sure hope everything goes good for us all a:)

I have it too...Talked to the nurse and she told me to sit a ton, and rest, etc., no lifting.

Talked (finally) to my doctor today who said it's very common at 20 weeks, and it will probs move up. He said use common sense in regard to how much I do. Also, he said I can have sex, but he said not to if I don't feel comfortable b/c I may bleed. No sex for me! :hugs: p.s. doc really put my mind at ease.

ya like jokerette said it means no sex or pelvic exams unless absolutely necessary until it moves. he said it will probably move but if it doesnt i will have to have a c-section.

I had placenta previa at my 20 week scan and by 34 weeks it had moved high enough for a vaginal birth :hugs: xx

hi ladies,
I was told i have partial previa at my U/S on thursday, i have had 3 normal births so the thought of a c-section terrifies me, first time I've ever dealt with this, and yep i scared myself too, bloomin internet lol!
but i also keep reading that in up to 90% of cases the placenta will move up enough to allow for a normal birth so I am keeping EVERYTHING crossed. They have booked me for a scan at 32 weeks to check the position. but i have a couple more scans before then so will keep asking, and will report back any news i have.
fingers crossed for all us ladies xx

pixiepower, we will keep updating this thread as we get our new ultrasounds. Please keep us updated on your progress and fingers crossed your placenta migrates north!

I have anterior placenta and also was told i had a low lying one at my 16wk appointment. When i went back for my 20wk scan it had moved up and was still anterior but not near blocking the cervix, the Dr said that most placenta's move up and out of the way natrually so try not to worry!

I had this with my first at my 21 weeks scan... Re-scanned at 36 weeks and all was fine. I've met lots of mums who had this during pregnancy and only one mum went onto have a C section. Good luck xx

Hey hon,

First of all, try not to read to much up on it, it'll only make your worrying worse. Secondly, I have placenta previa, which is sort of like a low-lying placenta. The difference is that yours is low-lying and has moved slightly already and a lot of the time it will move up naturally by 40 weeks. Things that could delay it from moving or prevent it from moving is if your baby has it blocked so it can't move, but since the baby moves quite often, that shouldn't be a problem.

Placenta previa is when the placenta is completely covering the cervix, and most of the time the placenta does not move with that. Mine seems like it's attached over it and they told me I would more than likely have a planned c-section, but this is different than a low-lying placenta.

My doctor compared our uterus to a balloon, and the placenta is like a dot on the balloon, as the uterus grows, the placenta should move as the uterus grows. I wouldn't worry until your next scan and I am sure it will move by then. xx

i was told at my 21 week scan that i have a low lying placenta which is partially blocking my cervix also. will be having a growth scan at 34 weeks anyway so hoping it moves by then. xo

At 20 weeks ultrasound shows a low lying placenta in around 30% cases. However at term this figure drops down to a mere 2%. This is because the lower segment grows very fats in the last trimester and this leads to migration of the placenta. The actual incidence of placenta previa is just about 1%.
