m6, m1, m25 and xmas time... HELPPPPPPPPP

my nan was coming up for xmas but her health is getting worse (or shes putting it on more... were unsure) so we have told her not to travel up here (her friends was driving her up here going back down to Canterbury then driving back up again to pick her up bless them ) as the traveling will more than likely trigger another illness then my mum volunteered me to drive her down to see her for a day

Anyway to the point what are these motorways like at this time of year im dreading it!!! i did it last October / November and that was bad enough!. We are traveling from J15/16 M6 straight onto the M1 then i think we take the M25 to Canterbury and then its a roads from there anyone got any advice on times to travel ect we are traveling down on Sunday the 9th and coming back on tue 11th
i hate being the only one who drives in this family!

well i live 5 mins off the M25 in surrey so if you fancy a cup of tea and some xmas cheer on your travels feel free to ahve a pit stop here hehehe also im just clueless on the roads sorry

my folks live in the midlands so I have to go up the m1 to m6 then get off m6 at junction 10, we usually go up for the weekend and drive back on sunday and the bit where m6 joins m1 usually gets very busy around 4-5ish on a sunday so try and avoid that sort of time hun xx

I would say definatley try to avoid the Birmingam area of the M6 at peak times, spagetti junction is horrendous. If you travel between 11-3 home on the Tues is likely to be the best time, and early on the Sunday morning is likely to be quieter as people rise later on a Sunday xx

I cant be much help but.. i live near canterbury!!

The 25 is always always busy cos its going in/out of london.. i think somewhere along the line (at the end) you'll want the m2..

because if you carry right on the m25 you'll end up on the m20, which is where i live haha.

theres not much you can do to avoid the 25 though, during the day time you should be fine.. - it'll be busy but doubt it'll be at a standstill. its just rush hours that you may get stuck in traffic xx

eta: just saw your ticker your pregnant too.. hope your not too uncomfy driving hun!

The sunday shouldn't be too bad, we usually visit my mum on sundays because it's easiest for my dad to drive us then.
The Tuesday if possible I'd leave after 7pm, the roads should be quite clear by then and your LO should be tired and sleep on the way home.

I do this route a few times a year and would agree wIth the person above who said leave at 7 we did this up until my lo decided she doesn't like traveling in the dark. we haves rarely been stuck when traveling evening time. if you can't do this I fond the middle of the day best so 11-2/3 in between the rush hours xx

On topic...my parents live in Norwich and i leave Liverpool about 7pmish, hit the M6 about 7.30 so i have missed the rush, coming back i leave about 6 and hit m6 about 8ish

thanks for your help and offers of brews i cant go until LO's dad pick him up on sunday (hes not coming with me, my nan isnt up to having a kid around plus last time he went down she accused him of breaking her tumble dryer)
are they still doing all the read works on the M1? they were a night mare last year i cant leave too late as im a early riser and a early sleeper i would be shattered!
im just excited for toddington service station ive always loved that one for some reason
