hello all

Not getting on with breastfeeding at all, so am switching to formula feeding.

Spoke to MW about it, and she agrees that i need to do whats best for me and Harriet (she was extremely jaundice at birth and isnt feeding enough from the breast to bring her levels down)

So, i have the tommee tippie bottles and powder dispensers as i know people who have used these. What they do is

sterilise bottles in the morning, add hot water.
pop the powder in the dispensers and put in the bottle, leave on the side at room temp.
when baby is ready for a feed, add the powder and feed at room temperature (some do heat the milk in hot water / bottle warmer)

does anyone else do this? The MW told me i shouldnt do this, but i know lots of people who have and their babies are fine..?

so much conflicting info, really isnt very helpful at all!!

would appreciate your views / advice on this :-)

thanks laydies! xx

Everyone seems to do it different and are advised differently. I was so confused at first too, What i do is, sterilise all the bottles, fill with boiled water. leave on the side, then when i need one i heat up the water in either a bottle warmer or jug of hot water depending where i am. then add the milk powder and cool the bottle down or if its ok just feed. Sometimes i do have to do it at room temp but the milk powder disolves better in warm or hot water. I use the milk dispensers if i am out for the day or i use them in my room at night time. If im in during the day i just measure it out from the tin in the kitchen!
Some people make it up with the powder and keep in the fridge, some dont add the water just make it one at a time when they need it, some people add half the water then add the other half boiled at the time, some store the boiled water and sterilised bottles in the fridge etc. It just depends what works for you,

this is what we have been doing but yesterday I bought a 1lt thermost flask.. so now first thing in the morning/last thing in evening, I boil the kettle and let it cool and then transfer the water to the flask. I get my powder dispensers stocked and put in bottles so when we need one I just add the water which is still at the right temp to the bottle and add the powder thats already measured out.

what do you mean you put the powder dispensers IN the bottle?? what kind of dispenser is it? mines a big tuv with 3 compartments and the lid moves round.. no way it would fit in a bottle..

i sterilise the bottles
boil kettle and pour water into the bottles and put in fridge to cool.
When baby needs a feed I measure out the required powder and put it in bottle, shake and then heat it up in boiled water for a couple mins.

Seems to work for me!

I use these

so each one has the 4 or 5 scoops of powder already measured out into it and then they sit perfectly in the top of the TT bottles waiting for when i'm ready,

ohh i use this, https://www.babyuniverse.co.nz/images/avent-milk-powder-dispenser-galleryfull-2.jpg

I've known people to use your method for making up bottles, never known anyone to have a problem with any method to be honest!

The recommendations are to make up the bottles with water over 70 degrees to kill any bacteria in the powder. There is also a chance that the bacteria will breed in the milk if you make it up in advance, although in theory if you make it up hot that should kill most things.

The guidelines are to made the feed up fresh with hot water (kettle boiled less than 30 mins ago) where possible. They have recently relaxed their recommendations, and where it isn't possible (I'd say night feeds comes into that catergory!), you should make the bottle up hot, cool quickly and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours, reheating as needed.

I keep mine made up in the fridge - I do 2 batches per day - first thing I make up a fresh bottle, plus 2 to store for during the day. At bed time I use another fresh one, plus one to store for the night. In the event that he doesn't wake up I use that one for breakfast.

Now I'm making 7oz bottles, I reheat in the microwave, although I never would have with smaller amounts. 30-50 seconds and we're done - just give it a good shake and wait a couple of minutes to make sure it doesn't get any hotter. Before that I used a jug and boiling water in the day, and a bottlewarmer in the bedroom at night so I could cuddle LO and keep him quiet while it heated. These each take 5-10 mins from chilled.

NB - I tried feeding at room temperature and my LO brought loads of milk back every time - if you have this problem, try warming!

see i was advised NOT to make them up in advance and store them in the fridge. The best way is to make it fresh when needed, but it depends what works for you. you get into a routine eventually.

thanks for the advice ladies. think i will go with the sterilising and adding water and leaving at room temp till needed. im sure if there is any problem with the milk Harriets bum or mouth will let me know!

sterilising is a pain in the bum to do every feed, especially when were going out!

trip to kiddicare to complain about our pram and purcase of some bottle warmers this afternoon me thinks! :-)

I do exactly the same...Steriliese the bottles in the night, so they can cool over night. Pop the milk in the dispenser and add when needed.
Joe is now just over 6 months old and he never had an upset stomach or anything like that. I would defo do the same with baby number 2.
I started to listen to my HV very selective...sometimes they just talk crap in my eyes. And HV's from different areas give different advice. My midwife told me to leave the bottles on the side to cool down and add the powder when needed.

I also make up the water in the bottles, leave them at room temp and warm up and add powder as needed.. I usually discard the water after 24 hours tho

When my first daughter was a baby, it was ok to make up the milk feeds and keep them in the fridge for no longer than 24 hours, and just heat them as you need them.
I know alot of ladies still do it this way but I've got used to the other way now, and it's also quicker heating up a bottle from room temp rather than straight from the fridge!
