Making up bottles in advance???

I boiled the water and kept it in a thermos after it cooled a bit. When a feed was required i made the bottle(water+powder) and microwaved it (shaken well after) if needed.

The current guidelines are NOT to make up formula in advance.. but the nurses looking after Leo said that in their eyes it's the government trying to make it difficult on people lol! They said it's fine to make up in advance as even they do, as medical professionals! I don't usually though, just because i haven't really needed to

I make bottles with water in advance once a day, store in the fridge, then microwave to warm (for like 30 seconds) before adding the powder. I do keep some other bottles in the fridge with extra sterile water if she wants more than the bottle I made I make an extra dose of formula, but that isn't often. I figure all the shaking to get the formula mixed in will get rid of any microwave hotspots. I used to warm the bottles in a cup of hot water but then that got to be too much of a hassle.

Erm..... I was just saying what I had been told.

And herein lie the problems we all face. Everyone appears to be told something different by various healthcare professionals - we never know what to believe do we?

I go on the premise that if I get conflicting advice, it's probably nothing risky and is down to choice. If they all tell me the same thing, it is probably something worthwile considering.

As I said, as long as everyone understands what the risk is, and what level of risk it is, there shouldn't be a problem with people choosing what suits them best.

It does say on the side of my Aptamil Comfort box that you have to make up the feeds as and when you need them.. also said it on aptamil stage 1!

But what I do is put 3 ozs of cooled boiled water in each bottle. Then leave them on the side and when I need them add 2 ozs of hot boiled water and add the milk. They're the perfect temp.
When I was making up the smaller feeds I used to do 2ozs of cooled and 1oz of boiling.
Hope this helps a bit hun. xxx

i do it this way aswell only i use 6oz of cooled boiled water and 3 oz of boiled water usually this is just a tiny bit too hot (but 7oz cool and 2oz hot is too cool) so it gets cooled under the tap and we're ready to go i've never known anyone else to do it this way xx

Its enough to make your head pop off insnt it!! I put the boiling water in the bottles and leave them to cool before adding the formula and then put them in the fridge, don't know what people think of that but I did it with my 3 year old too and he's okay lol I never leave them for more then 24 hours but tend to only make up 4 bottles at once anyway-4 for the day and then do another 4 for the night and first morning bottle.I never use the bottle if its been out more than an hour and when I go out I fill the bottle with boiling water put it in my thermo bag and take the powder in a seperate tub.

I make mine in advance too. I do the daytime ones in the morning and then the nighttime ones in the evening. I boil the kettle, leave it for about 5-10 mins, pour in 3oz (for a 3oz feed), add the powder, put the bottles in a bowl of cold water to cool down and then put them in the fridge. As and when I need them, I boil the kettle and warm them up in a bowl of hot water.

I add my powder to hot water to ensure all bacteria is killed and my LO has been fine. This is how my mum done it for me all those years back

If we are going out, I make a fresh hot bottle just as we are leaving and put it in a thermo bag thingy to keep it warm. Depending on how long we are out, I take sterilised bottles, a container with compartments with the relevant scoops of powder and then ask someone (a cafe etc...) to provide me with some boiling water. I make a fresh feed and then cool under tap water, depending on where I am. Or if I know LO is due a feed soonish, I make a fresh feed as above and put in the thermo bag so by the time he wants it, its pretty much the right temp

It's amazing all the different ways we do things and in a sense if only one way was the right way wouldn't we all be doing it?

We've only been FF for a few days now but we to start with made bottles up with boiling water allowed them to cool to room temp then put in fridge ( the reason for this is I always thought you shouldn't put hot food..any hot food straight in fridge as it grows bacteria) we would then take out and put bottle in hot water to take off chill.

I was told not to use microwave to heat as microwaves work by heating from inside out and cause scalding if hot spots were made.

However the process of re-heating the bottle I found took a long time to get to suitable temp, so i took the advice off somone on here to make the bottles with just half the water then when needed add the powder and boiled water to needed amount making bottle perfect temp and ready to go.

Told my MW about this method and she didn't seem to have any problems or opinions on it so we've carried on and touch wood baby fine xx

I couldnt make my mind up so for months now we have been using the ready made cartons - expensive but gives me peace of mind! xxx

I usually make up bottles for the next 12 hours, I leave them to cool for about half an hour before putting them into the back of the fridge xx

We use the ready made cartons. Make 4 bottles in advance and put them in the fridge. Did the same with my 3 year old and she's nice and healthy. X

That's the way I do it too, so much easier than making them up as and when you need them:flower:
