Hi, I was wondering if anyone would know the answer to this.

It looks like I'm going to be made redundant :nope: and I'm not sure how it'll affect my maternity allowance. I went onto the government website but it doesnt mention what'll happen when you're made redundant. I'm only 21wks into my mat leave so I'm only about half way through it. I'm really worried I'll have to find a new job and go back to work early.

I have to admit that I am not 100% keen on going back to my old job as it can be pretty stressful but I had planned on going back and giving it a go to see.

thanks

*update* - Well so far so good I wasn't made redundant this week and it looks as though my role has been made bigger which is good news for the redundancy and bad news for my chances of going back part time. The redundancies are being announced next week so I'll see what happenes then.

thanks for the replies!!

Are you getting maternity pay or smp pay? Either way your pay will continue. Because its based on what you have already earnt not what you will continue to earn

Thanks for the replies!! I'm getting Maternity Pay for another 12 weeks and then after that I'll be onto SMP. I'm relieved that I'll continue to get that. I'm already looking at jobs so FX'd I'll be sorted one way or another!!

Hi

I found out I was going to be made redundant just before I went on Mat leave! In my case (and I think is standard practice), they had to let me take my mat leave as I would normally i.e. paid for 9 mths SMP then 3 mths with no pay if I wanted. During this time I still accumulated holiday and also additional time towards my redudancy i.e. when I went on mat leave I'd been there for 2.5 yrs, this would have been 3.5 yrs at the end of my mat leave therefore making me entitled to more redundancy pay at the end. So, when I finished my mat leave I was entitled to a month in lieu of notice (everyone else had to work theirs but since I was on mat leave they couldn't get me to do that!), redundancy pay and pay for any holiday I'd accrued.

It's an absolute minefield - I found some info on the BERR website useful. Basically the rule of thumb when you're pregnant or on mat leave is that they pretty much have to treat you with kid gloves otherwise they leave themselves liable to all sorts.

Hope this helps, shout if you want to know anything else.

Hi Hun,

I work for a large bank and the policy there is they freeze the redundancy until you return back to work after mat pay. Therefore you are still entitled to all your mat pay and leave. I think this is standard practice in a lot of work places as this is what happened to a friend of mine.

I have been on redundancy notice for over a year - until last week when they decided to keep us all on! Talk about messing people's around!

Hope i've helped a bit

Sorry to learn of the problems you have been having at work. You are entitled to protective status in relation to redundancy whilst on maternity leave. Therefore, unless redundancy cannot be avoided i.e business closure, then all avenues must be explored before selecting you for redundancy because you have "protected" status whilst on maternity leave. There is a high burden of proof on your employer to prove they have done this. If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Kind regards, Jo
