How would you know when mayonnaise (shop-bought of course!) has gone bad? Just had some, it didn't taste any different or smell any different. The only thing is that the texture wasn't smooth. That could be because it hasn't been in the fridge yet as its a new bottle. But I dunno?

Be careful. Mayonnaise has raw eye in it and can cause serious problems when it goes bad. I have not touched mayonnaise since being pregnant.

I've tasted mayo that was left out of the fridge and went bad. It was a lot more sour than normal. Almost like miracle whip. And miracle whip is nasty. :P

I meant to saw raw "egg" (not eye-lol)

I think she's referring to the shop bought stuff with pasteurised egg?

anyway, there should be an expiry date on it, non?

Yep, shop bought pasturised stuff. Expiry date isnt until next year but I just looked at the texture and got a bit paranoid. I think its probably cuz it hasnt been in the fridge. Never really ate mayonnaise before pregnancy as I couldn't stand it, but now I can't get enough of it so I'm kinda a mayonnaise novice! It was kept in the cupboard but the cupboard door broke a few days ago so I was just thinking maybe its gone bad?!

Was it opened and then put in the cupboard? Once opened, it needs to be refrigerated. Otherwise, if it was still sealed it should be okay. But if you have any doubt, skip it. It's not worth the stomach ache.

I should mention how well mayo goes with bacon on a sandwich, once you finally get your beef bacon!

Once my FIL ended up in ER when were on a picnic - they said it was because of the potato salad that was left in the sun with mayonnaise in it; from that day I am very very careful with mayonnaise (I use Kraft and Miracle Whip). I love the stuff especially with avocado or with French fries.

Here's a non-egg recipe:
Ingredients:

3 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup soy milk
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp mustard
6 tbsp vegetable oil
Preparation:

Put all the ingredients except the oil in a blender. Blend on the lowest speed. Gradually - one drop at a time - add the oil until the mixture starts to thicken. Continue blending until thickened and smooth. Transfer to a jar and store in the refrigerator.

**Mislaww - raw eyes aren't as good as they sound...

Nope, it was sealed whilst in the cupboard. Put straight in the fridge after opened. I think I'm just being super paranoid, hopefully it was okay. I get paranoid over silly things. Blame the pregnancy! And mmmm can't wait for the beef bacon!

Strange. In which case it's probably fine, but better safe than sorry. Be careful!!
