Hi ladies, I hope you don't mind, but I'm just popping in from the first trimester because I'm looking for advice from some ladies that are now in the second trimester. Is anyone going to continue metformin throughout the whole pregnancy? I have been told different things from different doctors, so I want to see what others are doing before I make my decision and tell the docs.

Oh btw I am 10weeks today and will hopefully be joining you all over here in 21 days

Many thanks in advance

Hi, I took metformin for the first 12 weeks, despite being told not to by 3 different doctors (I did my own research after multiple miscarriages and I suffer from PCOS). I stopped taking it then after talking it through with another consultant and my hubby we decided that we'd passed the most dangerous part for mc. Im now 24 weeks and all is going well. I would have been happy to continue all the way through though.

My OB put me on metformin because I had PCOS and had trouble conceiving (took nearly two years).

He told me to stop at 10 - 12 weeks. I stopped at 12 weeks.

Im 23 weeks now and was put on metformin for my pcos and my doctor is very adamant about me continuing to take it throughout my pregnancy, so thats what I plan on doing.

I was put on 1500mg extended release metformin once a day by my endocrinologist. Once I got pregnant, she won't see me as she doesn't treat pregnant women and said my OB could handle my care or she would refer me to a specialist. I did my own research and want to take it throughout my pregnancy. I discussed it with my OB and he agrees but did decrease the dose substantially when I was about 10 weeks or so. I now take 500mg (not extended release) twice a day and am 24+4. He plans to leave me on that dose until baby is born.

I have PCOS and i havent been told to take it in this pregnancy or my first? What was the reasoning behind you guys having to take it due to POCS?

I have PCOS and have diabetes when I first got my BFP my reg dr who knows nothing about pregnancy (by her own admittance) told me to stop luckily I had researched it and debated with her about it when I finally was seen by an OB she told me to continue taking it which I will do til am induced at 38 weeks.

I had irregular periods and the both times I've conceived it's been on metformin but I take it to help with diabetes

I'm at 32 weeks and due to GD, I've been on metformin for about 3 weeks now. I take 500 mg twice a day, if that helps any.

My doctor told me its because when you have pcos certain hormone levels are raised that make it difficult to conceive and if you do conceive you have a higher chance of miscarriage because of the elevated levels. The metformin regulates those levels. I wasnt able to get pregnant until I started taking it. Tried for 18 months before I found out I had pcos and was put on metformin. Found out I was pregnant weeks after starting it. She wants me to continue on metformin even after my pregnancy so my levels stay regulated

Hello. I am also from first tri and saw this post. I am taking metformin 850mg twice a day for pcos and was taking it for insulin resistance. My dr. told me to continue taking it throughout my entire pregnancy.

Hey ladies thanks for all your stories. I have pcos and had a mc last August which is why im on them, so I think I will follow the advice of the doc that told me to continue throughout and just tell my OB that's what I'm doing....she wanted me to stop at 12 weeks along with my progesterone, but I worry that my body is used to me taking them and might react to me stopping. Thanks again xx

Sandyhen always do what feels right to you sometimes you just have to say no I was willing to say no my dr if she kept insisting I get off then but luckily all my drs agree to keep me on them and there's a few LOL

Thanks Lucy, I just worry that I will make the wrong decision, but I've researched and can see there is nothing to say that it can cause any harm if you do continue them throughout, so in this case I will follow what I feel is the right thing to do. Thanks again

I got put on metformin in my first pregnancy at about 12/13 weeks for diabetes (borderline/diet controlled, that turned into gestational diabetes).
Afterwards was told to stop while breast feeding.
I started again in feb when I stopped feeding and was advised to stay on it when I got pregnant again in June :)
