I posted this in another forum, but thought perhaps this forum would be more appropriate.

I am 9weeks 4 days pregnant. I am very excited, however very worried.
This past winter, I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy and was treated with methotrexate on 12-19-14.
My levels fell accordingly that first week so I presumed prenatal vitamins again, super b complex, and my shake which also has folic acid as directed by my MD.
My levels dropped to 23 on January 12th and after that I stopped going. I was hit with terrible deductibles and the process of weekly blood draws was starting to itch my sanity.
My levels dropped and we didn't do much to prevent pregnancy (we had tried for a year and nothing).
Lo and behold, 2/24/15 I received a positive pregnancy test.
I have read plenty of material about methotrexate, however did not receive much guidance regarding when to try to conceive. During my initial appointment after the shot, the MD had said 6 months for emotional wellbeing and healing.
My next appointment, my regular OB had said wait until your levels go to 0 and then we'll go from there.
Of course when I had my positive test the first question out of my mouth was 'is the baby going to be okay?'
I was assured by the doctor that everything is probably okay because the drug leaves your system within days - I had also resumed vitamin intake as well.
During my appointment yesterday (3-31) my doctor said she would do blood testing when I'm 15 weeks just to check for any neural tube defects just in case.
So far everything is looking good - and a heart beat of 165.
I was in a support group on facebook regarding ectopic pregnancies and asked the girls their experiences with pregnancy after methotrexate and I received lots of responses saying my baby is going to have defects because we conceived too soon despite assurance from my doctor. Their claims were based off of a website the group followed. I had to leave the group because I am a firm believer against internet based diagnosing.
Has anyone ever gotten pregnant after methotrexate sooner than the usual recommendation of 3 months to wait to conceive?
Just want to see if there's anyone else out there in my situation.
I am hoping and praying for a healthy baby.

I have not been in your situation but I would take a lot of comfort that your Doctor said it does not stay in your system and also it was about 6 weeks after taking it you got your bfp. The other dr was probably be cautious and they have to check every baby for neural defects. Sometimes people on websites are not nice people! I'm glad you left that group. I'm sure your baby is fine.
In the uk they no longer say the 6 month wait so don't feel bad about that either!
Xxx

Actually, they do still say 6 months in the UK. I had methotrexate in September - the single dose. My hcg dropped fairly fast but then tailed off when it was in the 50s and below, it took a whole week to go from 8 to 4, they had to get it under 5 to sign me off of their care.

The official guidance is a minimum 3 months but it is highly recommended to wait 6. It depletes your body of folic acid and you aren't supposed to start folic acid until your hcg falls below 5. Not sure why advice would be so different in a different part of the world?

Anyway, chances are everything is fine. Falling pregnant earlier doesn't mean your baby will have birth defects, just that you have a higher risk. It is still unlikely!

I'm currently pregnant after methotrexate although we did wait the 6m and everything looks ok so far.

I had an ectopic October 2009 and had methotrexate. My doc suggested 6 months as the methotrexate strips the folic acid from your body. I had a three month break and then took double strength folic acid prior to conception. I got pregnant again in the April 10 and he was fine.

I think its all based on the level of folic acid you can restore in your body. I'm sure you will be fine and everyone is different xx

Yeah the waiting time is because you need to get your folic acid deposits back up. That why your doc is saying he will check for neural tube defects. What I did was increase my folic acid to the max dosage of 5 instead of the just 1 that is in most prenatal. Your baby will be fine :)
