I like middle names and even if they don't have much use, it's cool to have them. If you choose not to use one, your third would be as different from his siblings as if you chose a name that you just liked and that had no family connexion. Either option is OK but I'm kind of with you on the meaningful names boat.
What about a hybrid of both nanas names? OR, when they're both together, have a random draw of one of their names, and the 3rd child would have the same middle name as one of her sisters (with one nana having her name used twice). I find that kind of cool! And it's not more unfair than one of them getting picked for your first child. OR a feminine version of a male relative's name.
I got full control of middle names since my husband considers them non-existent so I used my mom's name as middle name for my daughter and then for my son I wanted to use my last name (and dad's last name) since we decided not to use both our last names for the baby. I figured my name would exist somewhere and it would be better than nothing but when I told my dad, instead of being glad to have it there he was upset about it not being his grand-kid's official last name so on the spur of this frustrating moment, I just gave my son a random middle name that I only kind of like.
