Middle of the night pumping pals

I suppose we have to have a rough night here and there. DD just wouldn't sleep in her bassinet last night! She only lasted about an hour both times I put her down and the second time I got up with her I passed out so hard in the chair while feeding her... I'd been up since 3:30 and it was now midnight or maybe 12:30, so I'm not surprised. I woke up hours later with one very sore neck. Then of course it was time to feed her again... So just the one pumping session after the first time she went to bed and I didn't quite make it to two ounces.

I have to admit, it feels like I've been doing night pumping for at least a month with not much improvement, but in reality it's only been a couple of weeks and it's been inconsistent. Trying not to feel discouraged, especially since I've been taking moringa to increase my supply for 5 days now and not much improvement still. It seems most women have a huge increase in supply right around now, so we'll see how today goes...

I didn't start night pumping until DS started sleeping 6 hours ina row consistently, it was around 7-8 weeks. I didn't need to until he started sleeping that long! And he cluster fed until around then too. It was so much easier once that was over and things became predictable again! I hope DD gets there soon! Good luck!

I literally just spilled 3 out of the 5 oz I pumped today... I'm officially crying over spilled milk!

It's so hot here! Humid really... and I'm pouring sweat! Not something I used to do. Another one of those things that has changed. Like taste... things are spicier to me than they were before DS was born. I wonder if it is permanent or from breastfeeding.

OMG I could have written that post myself! When I was on maternity leave I went for a walk with DD in a wrap on the first nice day - it was about 65 and sunny. The perfect day for a walk! I worked up such a sweat, which isn't normal for me either. And the BO!! Poor DD fell asleep on our walk, so she had to smell it the whole time she was napping! :haha: I still tend to sweat more than normal, but the BO isn't quite as bad. I'm pretty sure it's the hormones.

And things definitely seem spicier to me. Like jalapenos are just a no go, and I used to love them. My heat tolerance was so high during pregnancy, though! Medium wings from BWW? YUM! I couldn't get enough. Now they'd be way too hot. :haha:

 KFC gravy... ok, I'm not that bad! Pepper does not yet seem spicy to me. :haha:

Other things don't seem spicy to me. But black pepper all of a sudden is super spicy!!

That's hilarious!

I didn't end up getting a second pumping session in last night because DD slept until 3! I believe she went to bed between 9:30 and 10, so that was a good sleep! If I could just get her down for the night closer to 7 or 8... It took her a while to finish eating and get back to sleep, so by the time we'd accomplished that it was time to get ready for work.

She seems to sleep so much less than other babies! She doesn't go down for the night until 9 or 10 most nights - occasionally later or earlier - and we're lucky if she sleeps until 6 before she wants to stay awake and play. She doesn't usually take very long naps during the day, either. Most of them are around 30 mins to an hour, though sometimes she'll sleep for most of the time between feedings.

I was so tired last night, I didn't even attempt to pump! I'm always bummed the next morning when I don't even try... Those ounces of milk I could have sent with her really bum me out! Maybe tonight in my half-awake state I can remember how bummed I am now and find the motivation to pump.

I have to set an alarm, or I won't wake up.

Late night last night, so I decided I'd pump at home at 11 and then not wake up at night to pump since I was going to sleep so late and needed to work in the morning. Well... someone decided to wake up at 2. And was in and out until I fed him at close to 3, was out for a very short time and up again, DH got him to sleep, but not for long (I never fell asleep between any of these) and I fed him again around 4 ish. And then he finally went to sleep at some point between 4:30-5. So my first 'sleep through the night' ended up being awake from 2-5ish. The worst night since newborn days.

He is not handling solids well, even though he doesn't get much at all of them. I'm going to stop and reintroduce in a few days.

I know so many people that are like "I introduced solids or cereal so my baby would start sleeping better" and I'm having SUCH the opposite thing here.

Ah, gotta love nights like those! Quite honestly, I'd prefer the newborn days to ones like those! At least then I could expect to be awake every 2-3 hours feeding as opposed to expecting to be able to sleep for hours and being woken up frequently. Somehow it's easier if I'm prepared for it!

He's just a few days over 6 months, right? Are the solids causing discomfort? Hopefully when you try again things will go more smoothly. Some babies' digestive systems just aren't quite ready for solids as early as others. Some simply aren't interested in food or don't do well until 8 months or so, so don't worry too much about it. It's a shame they aren't helping him sleep better, though!

Yes, I totally understand! I got used to the most of the night sleeping!

He is just over 6 months. I think I just need to lay off the avocados he loves and get him some pears to move things along.

That's great he loves avocados! They're really good for you. Although too much of a good thing still isn't good. I hope he does better going forward!

We were somewhat successful last night! I only got 3 hours of sleep, but I pumped.

Of course just as I was about done pumping after DD's first wake up, she woke up again. So I nursed her back to sleep and put her back in the bassinet. I decided to give it some time to see if she would stay asleep and pumped a little bit longer. Of course as I decided it was safe to go back to bed, she woke up again... I seemed to be struggling this morning with a really slow flow and it was frustrating DD. :( It was like my boobs were entirely empty.

No, it doesn't seem to disturb her. I use my manual pump, so there's almost no noise and I'm in the next room. I have the tv on while I'm pumping to keep myself from losing my mind and attempt to distract myself from bottle watching, but I always have the volume as low as possible so I have to really listen not to miss anything. I have it on while she's falling asleep so that she will be used to the sound as she goes to sleep and it won't somehow startle her from the next room even though it's really quiet. I think she just still sometimes falls asleep before she's actually full. Either that or she realized my warmth is gone and it wakes her up. Maybe both! I try to use compression while I feed her to try to get her nice and full, but for some reason I can never remember to do this at night. I imagine that would solve a lot of our problems with waking at night, but in my half asleep state I never seem to remember to do it.

DD slept 7-8 hours last night and didn't wake up until 5! I didn't go to bed until midnight, so I only got 5 hours of sleep. Man, my boobs were ready for her this morning! :haha: I'm surprised they didn't wake me up to pump. Or leak all over the bed. I've had both of those things happen in shorter periods of time than that.

So I've officially set a 2 am alarm just in case! And apparently she has a tooth that's visible now, so we may have a tooth coming through soon... I'm a bit nervous about that.

Yay!!! Hopefully this is the start of a good sleeping pattern!

A tooth already! Exciting and scary! Lol. DS doesn't have any yet. He has been teething for a while though. Must be getting them soon
