yesterday I was experiencing backache and getting contractions 3ish minutes apart lasting for about 60 seconds. I rang the hospital because I wasn't sure when you are supposed to go in. I read when contractions 3 mins apart but I wasn't in enough pain to go up in my opinion. When I rang up they said to wait and see how I get on and contractions get stronger. I managed get to sleep and had a nice night sleep and woke up with no contractions. Then a couple of hours after being awake I was having backache again. I just went for a midwife app and she said she could offer me a sweep so I said yeah. when she checked she said I was 3cm dilated and waters were bulging. She also said I was effaced but cervix still needs to thin out. Could anyone simplify this for me please? She said she'd expect me to need go hospital tonight and by latest tomorrow.

being 3cms dilated, you could go to hospital now and there will keep you in as they class it as established labour.

As you dilate your cervix becomes effaced, short and thin when there say "Oh your 10cms" that means your cervix has dilated/stretched/thinned out to the point a midwife can no longer feel it and then you will begin pushing.

You can go to the hospital whenever you wish too, some women are in a lot of pain right from the beginning and so go to hospital when 1-3cm dilated... But you can be in the hospital for a very long time. If your at home your much more comfortable and more able to walk around, have a warm bath etc...

More than lightly you will give birth either today or tomorrow, going by the fact your 3cms, so make sure you got those bags ready to go :) and goodluck

When you have had babies before you can be dilated without being 'in labour'. Women can be 4 or 5cms and not tightening at all so obv not in labour. Sounds very positive that things are getting going and once your labour gets going strongly then hopefully it will be quicker. But if you don't feel that you are contracting strongly enough (mumma knows best!) then just let them know and go on when you are. More chance of intervention etc if you go in too soon. But if your waters break and contractions get strong I would head in asap because third babies can come really quick when they get going! X

Also you usually have to be at least 4cms dilated to stay in hospital or you would be advised to go home. X

I had a sweep with my last pregnancy at 40 weeks (second pregnancy), my mw said i was 3cm and she said "if i wanted to i could break your waters now". I went to 40 + 4 then my waters went and he was born in less than 3 hours, i hadn't had any contractions though, nothing to speak of anyway.

I am 39wks today and sitting at 3cm with nothing happening....its also my 3rd baby so I second the PP if you aren't having very strong contractions stay home where you are more comfortable.
