I am just about 20 weeks. I had my gender/anatomy scan yesterday. Let me back up...

At 13 weeks I began bleeding lightly. I went in and they found a subchorionic hematoma (blood clot between the uterus and placenta). My dr told me that I would probably continue to bleed or I may not and my body would absorb the clot. Bleeding was off and on, nothing to concern me.

This past weeknd I all the sudden had large amounts of bleeding and it was red, not the maroon/brown that I had seen previously. I was concerned but hubs and I thought maybe it was just more of the clot coming out. I stayed home from work on Monday and we went to the ultrasound on Tuesday.

We saw our beautiful baby, perfect and healthy. A sweet girl. :) We are sooo excited to have a girl. I told the ultrasound tech that I'm still bleeding and she said well I don't see the clot anymore so I'm going to do an internal ultrasound to see if we can see what is causing the bleeding.

She took a look and then went to get a doctor. (scary moment) Apparently I have a low lying placenta AND my cervix is measuring 2.4cm which is not in the normal range of 3.5-4.0cm. They also saw some funneling of the sac into the cervix BUT they aren't sure if my old c-section scar is causing the sac to do that or if it's actually funneling. My doctor doesn't want to do a cerclage because she thinks it's too risky if the sac is funneling. She also checked me and said my cervix is closed but soft. I'm now on bedrest and being checked every two weeks. They did not give me medicine to take or anything. I am worried but I still have faith that bedrest will help this baby girl stay in.

Sorry this was SO long but if you have any success stories or unsuccessful but advice please share! I'm not sure what's normal....my dr and her supervising dr have never seen this before. I carried my first child to 39 weeks and he was 9lbs 10 oz and never a problem at all. They say normally if your cervix is incompetent it's evident before you have a child...it doesn't just get weak for no reason.

Please share anything!

Hi hun,

Just a suggestion but I think you should post in the Incompetent Cervix thread. It is checked regularly by all the ladies who are going through/have gone through it. You'll get more answers there I think.

i have no advice, but i wanted to offer you hugs and i hope you get some answers soon~

It's the thread titled "Incompetent Cervix - stitch/cerclage - threatened labour" and is always at the top of the list (at least in the top 10 posts)...

Sending hugs too and i'm sure the bedrest will help xxx

Hugs... I don't have much knowledge of incompetent cervix and that sorry, but I did want to say congrats on the SCH having disappeared. *hugs* I am really looking forwrd to that at the least!

Thank you all for your replies. :) Unfortunately I don't have "incompetent cervix", normally women who have this usually have always had that as a problem. I was able to carry my first to term so they are baffled as to why this is happening. Thank you though!!! :)

I have never heard that women that develop incompetent cervix have always had it as a problem... I have heard MANY stories of women that had a perfectly normal cervix throughout their first pregnancy, but then in a subsuquent pregnancy have developed IC - would definitely be worth posting in the other IC thread to get some more information from the other ladies? I am surprised that you dr's are so 'baffled' as to why this is happening... I've read a few different times that a previous pregnancy, labor, or just carrying a larger baby in general the first pregnancy can lead to IC in other pregnancies. One of the first questions my dr asked me when looking at my risk factors for IC was if I had any previous pregnancies, high birth weight babies, or traumatic labors.

Bet you glad you mentioned the bleeding. its scary this can happen with not much notice. Or maybe it does happen more but women just get to term with it. i have no real advise except to keep up the bedrest. i have seen lots of positove storys with bedrest.

hi again,

just to clarify. There are many cases off women having carried to term with their firsts and then having IC in subsequent pregnancies. The resident expert Lizziedripping had this happen to her. She went to term with her first and it was a big baby, almost 10 lbs. Having a large baby canweaken your cervix. I'm surprised your doctors don't know this. It is also wrong that women who have IC have always had it. My cervix was perfect at 16 weeks and then shortened after that for no apparent reason...that's IC. You might want to get a second opinion though hun because your doctors don't seem to be very experienced with it which is odd.

I agree with this completely! Tried to say pretty much the same in my response and you hit all the points I was trying to make :flow:

It really does shock me that your drs don't seem to have much experience with this as well, as recommended above I would def get a second opinion because it seems like you are not getting the correct facts about IC.
