We were let out of hospital yesterday and we are having a few issues, I was only just 36 weeks so they class this as premature but Jess was well enough not to go into special care thank goodness

firstly she won't latch on to me I've tried skin to skin, helping her open her mouth ect with no luck so in the meantime she is on Aptimal which she is now taking between 15-40 mls per feed depending on what she wants to take but she will only feed a laying down position ie on the changing mat or in Moses basket I've tried normal cradling, holding her away from me nothing works, I know that lying flat is not an ideal position and potentially she could choke but to make her take something at the moment it's the only way- what do I do ? I've had other people feeding her and sometimes it's worked but mostly she plays with it.

My second problem is that she has been having the hospital special disposable bottles and their premature teats, we took a few home but they are disposal things and not supposed to be used more than once. So we have tried Jess on our tomee tipee bottles which she hasn't taken to- so we have rinsed the bottles out in desperation and used them but we need to sort this out like now and don't know what to do

Argh not having a good first few days !

:hugs: aww hun congrats

With the bottles it is just trial and error, get hubby to go out and get a few types. The MAM bottles are good

Have you tried putting a blanket under her head while she is feeding just to raise her up slightly so there is less of a risk

yep it works ok sometimes but she also turns her head to the side which can't help the flow and probably gives her wind

we are going to go to mothercare today and see if we can find something that looks similar bit peved as I've got all tt stuff incl pump ect- will keep for future just in case

Dr browns do a preemie bottle:

I'm guessing the teats are probably quite small and
they should help with wind too if she's laying flat.

Have you tried feeding her laying on your lap with her head nearly on your knees and her feet near your tummy, cos her head is in a ridge she should find it more difficult to turn her head away and you can try to raise your knees slowly whilst she's feeding so she's not completely flat.

Dont worry to much bout buying different equipment, I use an advent steriliser with MAM bottles so it is interchangable

i had this trouble. Buy tesco cheap bottle and go to poundland and they do the nuk teats! Worked! i then weaned him back onto tt bottles so they didnt go to waste. Good luck hun! X

haha. I just reread this. Im not saying DO IT! But thats what i did on the recommendation of the hospital. My baby was born at 36.3 x

hiya! my lo was 10 weeks prem and wouldn't feed from me, he would only feed from the hospital disposible bottles, when we got him home we had the TT closer to nature bottles and had a nightmare as he wouldn't feed from them! anyway next day we went out and bought the nuk teats as these were the same as the hospital ones and he feed really well from them! they do them in latex too which he was used to in hospital, he now takes the tommee tippee bottles with no probs! good luk x x x

Mrs Doddy what 'preemie teats' did the hospital give you? C&G?
I have loads, and they CAN be sterilised, they are tough enough, neonatal told me this just watch them for any changes.

Preemie do take well to NUK teats though, I had months of tears until she finally got off the C&G teats and took these, it was heaven

Ethan was 36 weeks but did spend a week in neo. He came home at 37 weeks and he did take to the TT bottles ( later on when I tried Dr Browns, I realised the tt ones didn't work for him as he was taking in far too much wind with them).

The Dr Browns and Avent ones have the long teats so they are worth a try - again Ethan took well to these at about his due date lol so a month old.

Also, medela do a 'special needs' bottle which is basically an adaptor that fits onto the medela bottles that also fit onto the breast pump, so if you are trying to bf or planning to express this might be a good option. The adaptor is a long tube like teat which is very slow flow and the milk only comes out when baby sucks, so again good if you're hoping to bf. If you want any info on these pm me and I'll ask my mate who has them!

We found the Dr Browns bottles fantastic for Ethan and have only moved to Avent now once he was 6mo and no wind issues.

I haven't used Nuk (the only brand I haven't lol) but have heard good things - the teats are practically the same as avent and dr b.

if you ring cow and gate helpline and ask about the hospital disposable teats they will send you some to try out and they can order them for you as we did this as at the beginning ttcn were to big for my lo. They can be sterilised once after use. We also used NUK bottles which were great then weaned him back onto tt around 8months so he could hold the bottle (will only do this with handles and sitting on my lap)

Freddie was a 36 weeker and wouldnt latch on at all. He took to TT CTN teats straight away once i gave in to not using bottles!! but I do know the nuk ones are great too. They are really small. MAM are also good...he will use any of those! I had to syringe feed him at first, and wet his feet to wake him for feeds!! god it was a mare...it does get easier!! x
