Hi, I'm new to the assisted conception thread. I've never really thought I would be in this thread,... after concieving my first son naturally,...but here is my story for anyone who is interested.

I got pregnant with my son about a year and half ago and it was a confusing one at that. A few days after I got my BFP I got severe cramps, to the point I couldn't move. I was rushed over to triage and they did an ultrasound and found no gestational sac in my uterus. My cycle dates are longer than a normal woman's...I vary from 30-70 days. I knew I had just fallen pregnant because I used OPK and then counted two weeks out. Anyway, they were going off a 28 day cycle and said I was 6 weeks pregnant and wouldn't listen to me and finally said that they found a sac that had blood in it, but no heartbeat on the backside of my uterus. They said I had to go into surgery now before it ruptured. (At first they wanted to give me a shot to kill the rapid growing cells, but my husband refused, (he's a doctor too) and said something wasn't adding up. Long story short, it was just a large cyst that had twisted onto itself and I was still pregnant.

I had a rough pregnancy, lots of contractions, thinning of my cervix and by 27 weeks I went into labor. They stopped the labor by doing magnisium sulfate and other experimental drugs. I recieved steroid shots to help his lungs mature. I was put in the hospital for the remainder of the pregnancy. I had Brayden at 36 weeks gestation and was able to go home the next day. (He was a big, healthy boy.)

Anyway, we have been trying for 9 months with no success. I've been using OPK's and getting random positives here and there and having very long cycles, like 60 days plus and getting longer. I even bought an OVACUE fertility monitor and it was all a waste. I finally spoke with my high risk ob doc and he refered me to see someone to get on Clomid. Since I just got my period yesterday, they are going to put me on Clomid tomorrow at 50mg for 5 days. Then take the OPK's until I get a positive, if I don't get a positive after 23 days they are going to force a period by taking some medication. I'm scared/excited because my family history of pregnancies aren't great either. I just thought if I could do one child on my own I would be golden, guess not.

It also makes me think that there is something wrong with me just because it hasn't been a full year since I started trying again and they said I could go ahead with it. I'm grateful, yet scared.

Can't wait to get to know all of you ladies! :)

Hi and welcome:wave:

Most of us never thought we'd end up here:blush:
So sorry about your mc:hugs:
If all you are doing is Clomid, then you may belong to the Long Term TTC section, as Assisted Conception is for IVF, IUI etc

There's clomid club you might like to join:thumbup: https://www.babyandbump.com/problems-trying-conceive/59439-clomid-club.html

I agree most of us never imagined we would be in this forum. I honestly thought that I would start to try and after a few months I would be pregnant. Low and behold 19 months later we are using drugs and IUI. As scary as assisted conception can be you will find lots of support here.

When they first started us with drugs I was clomid 50mg days 5 to 9. No luck but since you have already carried one baby you ma find that the 50mg is all you need to jump start your body.

Good luck and fx'd crossed you get your bfp with only the drugs!

No one expects it. My doc lead me to believe all i needed was a small dose of clomid to get pregnant, and after he rapidly increased it over the last 8 months (all the way to 150mg for 10 days) and no ovulation, we are now moving on to IVF.
Best of luck to you.
I am new here as well. Just hoping to find people to relate to.

There are a lot more medications that can be used beyond Clomid! Please don't be discouraged.

I take Femara and respond it to much better than I ever did with Clomid. I also use injectibles, they are a bit pricey but in the long run very worth it. Injectibles will help produce GOOD hearty, healthy follicles.

Maybe try making an appointment with a RE, even if it's just for a consultation. They are trained professionals in this field. I found my first RE appointment (5 years ago) VERY VERY uplifting and I walked away feeling like I WAS going to get pregnant.

Good luck! :)

We've moved beyond clomid now and our next cycle should we need it will be with injectables which scare me to death but if it gives me >1 follicle I'll take it!

Springy -- don't fret about injectibles. I know that's easy to say ... but I was born with this HORRIBLE fear of needles (and blood). When I was a child, if I cut myself, I would pass out immediately on the ground if I saw any blood. Sadly, this continued till after my pregnancy ... now I am doing better. With my first IUI back in 2008, I had my brother-in-law do all my injections for me (he was a CNA). My IUI in February, I was dead-set on doing my own injections. I didn't want to waste any time driving to anyones house just so they could prick me. I watched a couple videos on Youtube ... this one gave me the courage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muwYYl09pyk .

That night, I did all my injections myself. Once you do it once, it's easy after that. I was still nervous, but I learned laying down on the couch made it virtually painless since I wasn't all tensed up. I promise you -- it isn't that bad at all. :)

Haha I actually watched that video yesterday!

I am glad to hear you did it while lying down I was thinking that it would make it better as I would be less tense and worried about it.

Lying down is the way to go! You just have to make sure your tummy is completely relaxed. Some girls prefer to shoot themselves in the butt, I found it much harder to twist around and the tummy seemed way less painful.

For a giggle, I took pictures of myself giving myself the shots and posted them on FB. That way all my friends and family knew what I was going through. They were all so proud of me ... and I loved the fact that they thought I was going through so much pain. When really I'd much rather inject myself than take any pill (pills give all the side effects whereas the injections gave me no side effects ... not even a red spot).

The specialist I have seen who gave me Clomid said he could refer me to a clinic that would give me a stronger medication but that my chances of conceiving on it would be 3% and that it would cost me $3000. I decided for the extra $2000 I would go for IVF and have over 50% chance of conceiving.

Not sure where in Canada you are but IVF in Ontario, and from my understanding in most of the country, is 10, 000 with 5000 of it being the drugs and 5000 being the procedure itself Thus if you can move to just the injectable drugs which are only about 1000 a month it is worth a shot.

What is the reason they gave you only a 3% chance with injectable drugs vs clomid?

He didn't give a reason, just spouted off the statistics. I assume it is because you already, without fertility issues, only have a 15-20% chance of conceiving each month...factor in my PCOS and the just getting some medication....he probably doesn't think I have a shot in hell...probably especially since I haven't ovulated EVER not even on 150mg of Clomid.
I have complete coverage of the drugs through my health insurance so IVF costs are only $5000...it would be $10,000 if I didn't have the coverage. also, if you go to Victoria, they have a shared-risk program where you pay the slightly higher first round cost...$5600 and you get the next 2 rounds at a severely discounted rate.
That is the plan....and my chances are %50 or better with IVF cuz I am young and in good health
