Hi Ladies,
I hope some of you will be able to help me out with this. I had my first fertility appointment today (well 2nd but fell pregnant after the 1st one 18months ago, so it was all cancelled=back to square one) after almost 3yrs of ttc our first baby. To say it was gruelling was an understatement! Firstly he told me he didn't believe I had any more that one miscarriage, as I only presented clinically with one (I wasn't going back after how I was treated during the first). He advised I have 'secondary infertility' tests, as I have conceived once (mmc), and so would do progesterone and hsg and refer me for immediate ivf.
Anyway the issue is that I am not ready to go down that route yet, and I would really like to know if I have problems that could be resolved so that we could conceive naturally. Don't get me wrong, if I was told tomorrow ivf was the only way, I'd be there in a flash, but it seems so hasty to me to just send you straight off for a 'test tube baby', as dr put it, without trying to see if we can resolve things first. Also I feel like if there are any level 1 immunology issues (as it seems there could be), what would be the point in wasting NHS money on IVF that will inevitably fail anyway?
So I argued my case and he reluctantly agreed to do immunology level 1 tests, but warned that that is really the end of the road for us. He said if it comes back that all is fine with immunology, we won't be entitled to any NHS IVF....is this correct? I was a little taken aback. I can see the premise of this; we can conceive, just not sustain a pregnancy....but I've heard of quite a few people going down the IVF route with this issue and having success. Does this mean they all must have done it privately?
If this is the case, does it mean that if we were to ttc for longer than 2yrs and not fall pregnant at all during that time (we've had no pregnancy since September last year- so no further losses), would we be entitled to NHS IVF then, or do previous losses mean that we wouldn't be entitled indefinitely?
Feeling confused
Thanks for reading girls x
