well i'm still smoking and it's getting worse and worse.
i was smoking 2 packs a day when i found out i was pregnant. i cut dramatically down to 1/2 a pack. then went back up to 1. then went to less than a pack a day. now i'm on a pack and a half a day!

I NEED HELP!!!!!!!

at my first dr appointment after finding out i was pregnant, the nurse practitioner said she wasn't sure if nicorette gum or the nicotine patch was safe during pregnancy and then she left the room to go ask the drs.
when she came back she said the drs she just asked said it wasn't safe to use while pregnant. so that option was out for me.

where doctor group i was seeing had a rule. there are 5 drs there and i would be seen by every dr there at least twice during my pregnancy. i went there 3 times and seem someone different each time. (insurance issues got in the way and i am no longer going there anymore)

well, at my last dr appointment there, i was talking about my smoking and how i need help to quit. the dr, who i never seen before, told me that i could use nicorette gum or the patch to help quit.

i am very confused and do not know what to do. i obviously don't have the will power to quit cold turkey. I NEED HELP!
has anyone heard anything about either methods to quit smoking while pregnant??? i want to quit and know i need to more than ever now, but i need the help.

I was told that neither were safe in pregnancy! I had to go cold turkey! and like you i loved to smoke but after a week it got easier and i have never looked back! good luck hun!

I went to the MW about giving up at 6 weeks pregnant. She gave me a prescription for the 25mg nicotine patch as she told me it was safe for pregnant women. I dont know about the gum as I told her it didnt work for me in the past, so I didnt get offered that, but I think if I would have asked for it, she would have give it to me. I reckon any form of NRT is better than actually smoking a cig..??!!

Luckily, i didnt need any as I gave up cold turkey 3 days after...:happydance:

Good Luck! xx

I've never smoked, but I've had a really close friend who was a very heavy smoker before getting pregnant. I know it's very very difficult and I would like to say good luck!! :hugs:

I was told that being on the patch was no more dangerous than smoking. Meaning that if it helps you quit smoking you should use it.

I feel your pain, I am also struggling to quit, cut down from 4 packs a day to 1. I've bought the patches, now I am setting my quit date. Good luck, sweetie. I know how scary the idea of giving them up is. We can do it!

to be honest I smokes up until a few weeks ago... I just didnt have money for ciggs one day since my oh lost his job and thats when I decided okay i think its time to give it up... It wasnt as hard as I thought it as going to be...

Ooooh , I forgot I also ordered another copy of Alan Carr's book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking", which worked for me before, I had to get new copy because I gave it to my mother who quit smoking and she then passed it on to someone else.

nicotine isn't safe for the baby thats why they have to say that, but it is much better than smoking. smoking is so much worse as there are thousands of chemicals in it including carbon monoxide and rat poision. :( these cross the placenta to your baby. I used nicotine gum for a little less than a week when i found out so that i could quit. atleast the gum only has nicotine in it. good luck i know how hard it is to quit. xx

im on a 15 mg Nicorette patch at the moment i tried to stop before (pre preg) and was on the 25mg patch so my doc has obviously decided to give the light dosage, which i find better as the 25mg patch made me sick the minute i put it on. My doc said that being on the patches is definately not as dangerous as having a cig.

Sorry to butt in! But my doctor told me the same, then he asked another doctor and they agreed that the best option would be to use the nicorette inhaler! I quit cold turkey and used the inhaler whenever i had a craving and it worked really well! He said the nicorette products arent intended for pregnancy but that the benefits outweighed the risks, good luck quitting

i am on the nicorrette gum and my doc said its fine.xx

I found the patch made me very anxious permanently, I only used it for a day or so years ago. I stopped using it cause I hated it.

I smoked for 10 years..... tried to give up several times unsuccessfully then I finally managed to a couple of years ago with patches, absolutely swear by them! Start off with the bigger ones for a week or two, then gradually downsize but don't stop using them until you are not really getting any cravings at all otherwise you will just start up again.

I agree with the others, they are not designed for use in pregnancy but then neither are cigarettes and the patches are so much better for you then cigarettes, at least it's only nicotine! Good luck hun, it was the hardest thing I ever had to do :hugs:

The thing that really worked for me though was after about 6 months of giving up, if I really really craved a cigarette then I would just have one. Omg they tasted SO gross that after a couple of drags I would be well and truly put off and put it out!!
